Riot changes Vel’Koz pricing as a likely April Fools’ joke.
At the start of Season 13, Riot promised that they would be bringing some quality-of-life changes to the game. And one of these changes is the update to champion pricing.
League of Legends was released back in 2009, which is over a decade ago. In its fourteen years of service, many champions have been released to the game. Currently, the game has 163 champions. Because League of Legends is a free-to-play game, each of the champions must be separately bought. The champions can be purchased with either the free currency Blue Essence (BE) or the premium currency Riot Points (RP).
Yet, until recently, the game’s pricing scheme was somewhat outdated. The system prioritized the champion’s release date over the champion’s demographic. But on Patch 13.5, Riot updated the champion’s pricing. The champion’s pricing was re-categorized from new player-friendly champions to the latest champions.
Even though the prices were set and released with Patch 13.5, Riot recently changed the champion pricing for Vel’koz only.

New Vel’Koz Pricing
The prior pricing of Vel’koz was 3150 BE / 790 RP, which was meant for Champions with a high learning curve. But now, the new pricing is 3141 BE, which is a nod to the number Pi(π). Riot probably did it as an April Fool joke. But, even after the event is over, the price remains at 3141 BE. So, it is very probable that the change will remain.

It’s great to see Riot implement these kinds of fun changes from time to time, and hopefully, Riot will continue to do so in the future.
