Barrett is one of the first companions you will meet in Starfield. While you will encounter him right at the beginning, you won’t be able to make this space adventurer right away.
This core member of Constellation will be available as a companion only when you progress through the story and reach a certain point. While by designation he is a physicist, you won’t find Barrett getting stuck behind a desk & a lab.

Barrett Skills
According to the official statement of Bethesda & Starfield’s Twitter team, Barrett was part of the United Colonies before he joined the ranks of Constellation. He was a physicist who focused on Starship engineering.
When he is available as a companion, he will provide the following skills:
- Starship Engineering
- Particle Beam Weapon Systems
- Robotics
- Gastronomy
He has 4-star skills in starship engineering, 3 stars on particle beam weapon systems, two stars in robotics, and 1 star in gastronomy. So, if you want a ship engineer with ballistic expertise & gastronomical support, then Barrett is your guy.
How to Recruit Barrett?
To recruit Barrett to join you. You will have to complete the quest ‘Back to Vectera’; this is a main story quest, so you will come across it as you play the game.
In this quest, you will have to rescue Barrett from the pirates who captured him after you left the Argon mining group at the beginning of the story.
Once you have finished the quest and returned to the lodge, you will have the option to interact with Barrett and select him as one of your companions.
Can You Romance Barrett?

Barrett Assignments
In Starfield, you are able to assign roles to your companions. Assigning specific roles based on a companion’s skillset will provide you with maximum benefits.
For Berrett, assigning him to improve and enhance your ship’s qualities provides the best results. Remember that you will have to bring him on your ship to utilize this; you won’t be able to benefit from his skills if you leave him on an outpost.
