In Starfield, there’s a mission named Into the Unknown. You need to investigate the Source of the Anomaly to complete the mission.
Starfield offers a player the cosmos; an interstellar adventure full of discovery and danger. But some of the most perplexing mysteries are found closer to home, like the obscure objective to investigate the Source of an Anomaly in the “Into the Unknown” main quest.
An anomaly is an unusual or unexpected event that differs significantly from the standard, normal, or expected behavior. Examples include unexpected spikes or dips in data, abnormalities in specimens or processes, or any unexplained deviations. While anomalies may seem minor at first glance in Starfield, they warrant attention.
Unlike much of Starfield that guides players hand-in-hand, this objective provides little direction. Therefore, follow our step-by-step guide to investigate the Source of the Anomaly hidden on Procyon III.

Investigate the Source of the Anomaly in Starfield
Trust Your Scanners
After landing on Procyon III, open your scanner and slowly pan around. What you need to do is look for distortions in the scanner’s white circle. You will also look for visual glitches and red flashes. Once you find those, then you are facing the right direction.
Follow the Signal
With the scanner in hand, head towards the distortions. An “Unknown” marker eventually appears, so stick to that path. Move deliberately so you don’t lose the trail.
Enter the Temple
If you keep following the distortions lead, then it will take you to a weathered temple. Drop inside and traverse the zero-gravity interior. Don’t leave through the far door, or you’ll exit prematurely.
Solve the Light Puzzle
You will see some floating lights dancing overhead. Quickly fly through each one to spawn the next light. Repeat until the central artifact fully activates. Work swiftly, as the lights reset after a short time.
Uncover the Anomaly
Once the artifact stops spinning, float into it to trigger a scene and unlock a new antigravity power. Return to the Lodge and use your new power to complete the quest.
You should definitely investigate an anomaly when you come across one. Often, they provide clues to underlying issues. Pinpointing an anomaly’s source can help identify weaknesses in systems or areas for improvement.
With an entire galaxy to explore, Starfield holds countless mysteries. But with a cool head and a little intuition, intrepid travelers can navigate even the most obscure objectives on their journey through the stars.
