Saturnalia is a unique survival horror game in both how the game plays and how it looks. The game has a very eye-catching hand-drawn looking art style and stop-motion animation that expresses the grim and horror environment well.
Furthermore, the game is described to be “a kaleidoscopic adventure inspired in equal parts by authentic Sardinian folklore and classic Italian Giallo horror films.” As such, in Saturnalia, you play four different characters as they traverse and explore the village of Gravoi, Italy, celebrating the winter solstice with questionable and disturbing cultist rituals.
The game has no combat, so you must use your wits and the unique abilities of the four characters to escape any deadly force or use your surroundings to hide and investigate. You must uncover the dark secrets behind the cult’s rituals while keeping safe from murderous individuals and monsters from the darkness.
The best part is the game’s progression; like a rogue-like game, Saturnalia offers non-linear gameplay. After the death of one character, the physical world, in addition to the game’s narrative, changes. It all depends on how you play the game, your choices, and your actions. Hence, each playthrough is a different yet thrilling experience.
