We will likely be getting fewer new champions in 2023 and 2024.
League of Legends is a pretty old game. It was released in October of 2009, over a decade ago. Despite its age, the game remains one of the most popular games in the world. And League of Legends stayed at the top because of Riot and their willingness to change and evolve. They frequently changed the game and added new content, champions, skins, and game modes.
That being said, for the past few years, the game seems to have stagnated. Riot stopped adding new content and new game modes and even stopped bringing back old game modes. It felt like Riot was abandoning League of Legends. The concerns started to feel even stronger with the start of Season 13.
First of all, the Preseason 2023 was very underwhelming. It had some good changes, such as the Jungle changes, New Tank Mythics, and minor buffs here and there, but the changes ultimately were quality-of-life changes and didn’t offer much to shake up the meta. Then came the Season 2023 Cinematic “The Brink of Infinity.” It was a very disappointing cinematic, and Riot received tons of criticism.
Riot apologized for their mistakes and said they would work hard to earn the players’ trust back. They also said they would be more transparent and communicate with their fans more.
They have released multiple Dev Diaries since then and sharing their progress. In their latest Dev Diary, Riot Brightmoon and Meddler stated that they would be Updating older champions and creating more ASU but releasing Fewer Champions in 2023.

Fewer Champions But More Content Overall
In the recent Dev Diary, Riot shared their plans for league of legends going into 2023. Riot said they would release fewer champions this year and focus on updating the older ones. They have already released the Aurelion Sol CGU, Annie mini-rework, and Ahri ASU this year. Now Riot is focusing on the Lee Sin and Teemo ASU.
Other than the ASU’s Riot is also working on game modes. They will be finally ringing back Nexus Blitz this year. Additionally, they are also working on a 2v2v2v2 game mode.
