In a recent stream, Riot Games co-founder Marc Merill discussed adding voice chat to League of Legends.

Communication is very important in an online game, especially when it’s a team-based game. Most online games offer a variety of ways for players to communicate with each other, such as text chats, pings, emotes, voice chat, etc. Even though League of Legends is a competitive team-based game and communication is very important in this game, there is one type of communication that is still not available in this game. And that communication type is voice chat.

In solo queue or in general, League of Legends offers only a few ways to communicate with your teammate. These methods are, text chat, emotes, and pings. Pings are the most common method as it can be done really fast and there are no language barriers through that. However, pings are a vague way of communication and many players still don’t understand what the pings’ intentions are. Therefore, for these reasons, players wanted Riot to add voice chat to League of Legends for a very long time. But the main reason, Riot avoids adding voice chat is because of the toxicity.

It is not like League of Legends doesn’t have a built-in VC system. It does have a built-in voice chat system through the client. However, you can only communicate with players in your party. The reason players don’t use it is that players already communicate with their duo or their squad through apps like Discord or Teamspeak.

With all of that, recently, the co-founder of Riot Games, Marc Merill, streamed on Twitch while discussing various topics. One of those topics was about the addition of voice chat in League of Legends. Here’s what he had to say about it.

League of Legends: Riot Reviews Wether to Add Voice Chat To League of Legends

Not too long ago, Riot Games mentioned that they are not adding voice chat to League of Legends any time soon. The main reason is the toxicity that exists in League of Legends.

Recently, Marc Merill discussed adding voice chat in League of Legends. He stated that, one reason they don’t add VC to League of Legends due to unfriendly players. But they still do it in Valorant. Most importantly, the League of Legends dev team is currently reviewing and looking to add voice chat to League of Legends.

It might be a good decision to add voice chat to League of Legends in one of the upcoming seasons. The main reason is the changes coming to the Honor system and other player behavior changes. It will reduce many toxic players from voice chat and overall from the game. However, right now, we have to wait and see what Riot Games does with the system.
