Sony may be reconsidering the timeline for PlayStation’s move away from physical games, according to a new rumor circulating after Gamescom 2026. The report claims Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox strategy could be one of the biggest reasons behind the potential rethink.

The information reportedly originated from discussions heard around the Gamescom show floor and was shared through a Eurogamer Spain podcast before being reported by MP1st. However, none of these claims have been officially confirmed by Sony or Microsoft.

In brief

  • Sony is reportedly considering delaying its transition away from physical PlayStation releases.
  • Microsoft is rumored to be pitching Project Helix to publishers with strong physical game support.
  • An unnamed major publisher allegedly threatened to skip PlayStation without a guaranteed physical release.
  • Sony and Microsoft have not officially confirmed any changes to their next-generation hardware plans.

Xbox’s Physical Strategy Could Be Making Sony Reconsider

According to the report, Sony has allegedly realized that abandoning physical games could leave an opening for Microsoft to attract players who still value discs, collecting, resale, and physical ownership.

Microsoft is reportedly telling publishers that Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox platform, will strongly support physical games while allowing users to convert eligible physical purchases into digital entitlements.

There is at least some confirmed information supporting part of that claim. Xbox officially announced a new feature on August 26 that allows players to insert supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X discs and claim digital entitlements for them. Microsoft says thousands of games will eventually be supported.

However, Microsoft has not confirmed that Project Helix will have a disc drive or follow a “100% physical” strategy. Recent comments from Xbox leadership stopped short of confirming physical media support for the hardware.

Major Publisher Reportedly Threatened to Skip PlayStation

Perhaps the most surprising part of the rumor involves an unnamed major publisher. The company allegedly told Sony that if it could not guarantee a physical version of an upcoming “massive title,” it could skip PlayStation entirely and release the game on Xbox and Nintendo platforms instead. The publisher is reportedly not Rockstar Games.

There is currently no independent confirmation of that claim or the publisher’s identity.

Sony’s Digital-Only Plan Has Not Officially Changed

Playsation Discontinues Disk Production

As of writing, Sony’s existing policy remains unchanged. The company announced on July 1 that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will end starting in January 2028. Sony CFO Lin Tao later acknowledged strong community opinions but said the company would “cautiously” move forward with the transition.

That makes the Gamescom report worth watching, particularly as Xbox pushes its new physical-to-digital system. Still, until Sony announces a revised timeline or Microsoft confirms Project Helix’s disc support, the bigger claims should be treated strictly as rumors.
