Xbox is making physical game ownership much more flexible with a new feature that effectively lets players turn supported Xbox discs into digital entitlements.
Microsoft announced the feature on August 26, confirming that Xbox Insiders will be able to start testing it on August 31, 2026. The system is designed to give physical game owners access to digital Xbox features without taking away their ability to use the original disc.

How Xbox’s Physical to Digital Feature Works
According to Microsoft, players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported physical game into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching it.
Once the entitlement has been claimed, the game can receive the benefits normally associated with digital ownership. This can include Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, provided the individual game supports those services.
Importantly, Microsoft is not disabling or replacing the physical copy. The original disc will continue to function normally after the digital entitlement has been claimed.
So while the feature can be described as turning a disc into a digital copy, technically Xbox is granting players a digital entitlement tied to an eligible physical game, rather than literally converting the data on the disc.
Thousands of Xbox Games Will Be Supported
Microsoft says the program will launch with thousands of titles, covering most Xbox One and Xbox Series X games that were released physically. However, not every disc-based game will be supported when testing begins. More titles are expected to be added over time.
Xbox describes the system as part of its wider commitment to game preservation. With gaming increasingly moving toward digital libraries, cloud gaming, and devices without disc drives, giving physical owners a digital entitlement could make older libraries easier to carry forward.
