Bungie has rolled out Marathon Update 1.0.5.3, and while this is not a massive content drop, it does include a handful of meaningful fixes and balance changes that players will definitely notice. This patch touches several important areas of the game, including UI bugs, melee combat, Bubble Shield balance, movement exploits, Contracts, and an extraction issue in Cryo Archive.
The biggest theme here is pretty clear. Bungie is trying to smooth out frustrating bugs while also dialing back some of the more oppressive close-range melee setups. If you have been dealing with empty Vault screens, weird Armory refresh issues, or some of the stronger knife and melee builds, this update is aimed directly at those problems.
Marathon Update 1.0.5.3 fixes Vault and Armory issues
One of the more annoying UI problems in Marathon was tied to the Vault and Armory. With Update 1.0.5.3, Bungie says it has fixed an issue that caused both sections to sometimes appear empty. The patch also fixes a separate problem that made Armory item refreshes and free daily items fail to appear consistently.
That should be a welcome change for players who rely on those menus to manage gear and keep track of daily freebies. These kinds of UI bugs may not sound flashy, but they can make progression and loadout planning feel way more frustrating than they should.
Knife melee gets nerfed in Marathon Update 1.0.5.3
The most impactful combat change in this patch is aimed at the Knife. Bungie reduced its maximum lunge distance by about 10% and also trimmed the targeting angle by roughly 20%. In simple terms, knife attacks should now feel a little less forgiving when players try to snap onto targets at close range.
This is clearly part of a broader effort to rein in melee dominance. Marathon has had some tense close-quarters fights, but when melee starts deleting players too easily without much build investment, it can quickly become frustrating. These knife changes look like Bungie’s attempt to make melee more deliberate rather than automatic.
Bubble Shield sees major balance changes
Bubble Shield also got a notable overhaul in Update 1.0.5.3. Bungie increased its rarity from Deluxe, which is blue, to Superior, which is purple. On top of that, Bubble Shield now has 33% less health. However, it is no longer vulnerable to Volt Weapon damage, and its resistance to UESC damage has been increased by 17%.
This is an interesting tradeoff. Bubble Shield is now harder to acquire because of the rarity bump, and it is less durable overall because of the health reduction. At the same time, Bungie has adjusted how it interacts with certain damage types so it is not getting shredded in the same way as before. That suggests the goal was not to make Bubble Shield useless, but to make it less of an all-purpose panic button.
Melee Damage stat is being toned down against enemy Runners
Bungie also made an important adjustment to the Melee Damage stat for Runners. The bonus damage it provides against enemy Runners has been reduced from a maximum of 100% to a maximum of 50%. Damage against non-Runner targets remains unchanged.
In its developer note, Bungie explained that melee is supposed to be a high-risk but powerful answer to close-range weapons like SMGs and shotguns. The problem, according to the team, was that the damage breakpoints for quick melee kills were showing up too early in the stat progression. That meant players could reach highly effective melee output without really committing to a full build. Bungie says it still wants melee to feel strong, but believes that peak performance should come from meaningful buildcrafting and upgrade progression instead.
That explanation gives this patch a lot more context. Bungie is not trying to kill melee builds entirely. It just wants them to require more thought and more investment, both before and during a run.
Thief movement exploit gets another fix
Update 1.0.5.3 includes another fix for Grapple-related slide cancel movement exploits for Thief players. Bungie says it has fixed additional versions of this exploit, continuing its effort to clamp down on unintended movement tech.
Movement is always a sensitive topic in shooters like Marathon because some players see advanced tech as skill expression, while others see it as a balance problem. Bungie seems pretty firm on where it stands here, especially when those techniques cross the line into exploit territory.
Traxus contract becomes less restrictive
There is also a quality of life change for Contracts. Bungie removed the “in a single run” condition from Traxus Return On Investment 4/5.
That is a small change on paper, but it could make this objective a lot less annoying to complete. Any time a requirement like that gets relaxed, it usually means the developer agrees the original version was more tedious than challenging.
Cryo Archive extraction bug has been fixed
Finally, Bungie addressed a bug in Cryo Archive that could interfere with extraction. Before this fix, the exfil countdown could reset if the first crew member to enter the circle stepped out, even when other crew members were still standing inside it. Update 1.0.5.3 fixes that issue.
That should make team extractions feel more consistent in one of Marathon’s key zones. Bugs that mess with extraction logic can be especially painful because they hit players right at the most important moment of a run.
Marathon Update 1.0.5.3 is a smaller patch, but it still hits several pain points. The UI fixes should clean up some daily frustrations, while the melee and Bubble Shield adjustments look like Bungie’s latest attempt to make close-range fights feel fairer. Add in the Thief exploit fixes, the Traxus contract adjustment, and the Cryo Archive exfil fix, and this ends up being a more meaningful patch than its size might suggest.
