Bungie is handing Marathon players an extra two weeks with the game’s first proper PvE experiment. Vault Breaker was scheduled to shut down on August 4, but the Marathon dev team has confirmed the mode will stick around until August 18 instead due to strong demand.
In Brief:
- Vault Breaker now runs until August 18 instead of closing on August 4
- Bungie says strong player engagement and feedback in Cryo drove the decision
- The mode is a roguelite PvE run built around Vault Data and Sponsored Kit upgrades
- Feedback from Vault Breaker is shaping Marathon’s permanent PvE mode in Season 3
The announcement came straight from the Marathon dev team, who thanked players for putting the mode through its paces in Cryo and giving the studio a clear read on how the experiment is landing. Because of that response, Vault Breaker stays live until August 18. The team also made a point of saying the feedback is being carried forward as development continues, which reads less like PR filler and more like a studio that actually needed the data.
Bungie never sold Vault Breaker as a permanent feature. It arrived as a two-week test, so extending it doubles the window Bungie has to watch how people play it.

Vault Breaker is a standalone, time-limited roguelite mode set exclusively on the Cryo Archive map, playable solo, in duos, or in trios, with no runner level requirement. The loop is simple to explain and harder to master. You crack open Vaults, fight UESC forces instead of rival crews, and decide when to pull out before the difficulty scaling catches up to you.
Gear you find inside mostly stays inside, but successful extractions pay out Vault Data, a resource you sink into permanent Sponsored Kit upgrades that carry across future runs. Push deep enough, and you eventually run into the Compiler. And for a massive chunk of the player base that never wanted to be hunted by other squads in the first place, this was the version of Marathon they had been asking about since launch.
Bungie has already committed to a full, permanent PvE mode arriving in Season 3, and Vault Breaker is the testbed for it. Every run logged between now and August 18 is effectively research for that build. Given the turbulence around the studio this year, keeping an experiment open because players showed up for it is a reasonable signal to send.
If you have not touched Cryo yet, you now have until August 18 to see what the fuss is about.
