Riot has finally shared some new details about the upcoming Skarner rework.

League of Legends is a constantly evolving game, and the developers at Riot Games are always looking for ways to improve the gameplay experience for players. One of the ways Riot achieves this is by reworking champions. Riot regularly updates or reworks older champions to bring them up to modern standards, and the champion next in line for a rework is Skarner.

Skarner, The Crystal Vanguard was originally released back in 2011, which means he is currently over ten years old. Being such an old champion, he needed some changes, and these changes are coming in the form of a full VGU or Visual Gameplay Update.

In February of 2022, Riot held a vote to determine the next rework, and Skarner won by a landslide. Skarner beat out Shyvana, Kog’Maw, Tryndamere, and Nocturne and became the champion that will be reworked in 2023. Apart from the announcement and some concept art, Riot didn’t share much about the rework.

But, after months of anticipation, Riot Games has finally revealed fresh information on the Skarner update. This post will go through what players can expect from this update.

Future of Skarner Rework

Recently, Riot released a Dev Blog going over the rework and how they will be approaching the rework. Before going into more detail, Riot clarified some information about the current state of Skarner. They stated that Skarner scored THE lowest of all champions in the following categories,

  • Visual appeal
  • One of your favorite champions
  • I like this champ’s personal style
  • Visual fit with the character
  • A clear understanding of the character.

He also is one of the least popular champions in the game. Because of these factors, Riot is looking at his rework from a different perspective and will be building him up from the ground up.

First, they are revisiting the Brackern as a race and are looking to expand their role in Runeterra. The Brackern will be Runeterra’s first earth elementals, dating back to pre-civilization. They will be an ancient and powerful race that is revered for their primal knowledge of the earth.

Thus, Riot will also be changing his crystal theme to a more earth-mage theme, perhaps akin to Guardian of the Sands Skarner. Additionally, They are changing Skarner’s birthplace from Shurima to Ixtal.

As for abilities, not much has been revealed about them yet, other than his ult -Impale. The ability will not be an AOE skill shot, but rather than point and click ability.
