Riot Games finally shares more information on the upcoming Progression Identity changes for League of Legends.

Ever since Riot introduced the modern-looking client back in 2017, it has been receiving mixed reactions from the League players. After that update, according to Riot, players are now able to show off their profiles and achievements in a variety of ways.

As it’s already been around four seasons since that update, Riot is currently trying to add more Progression Identity elements in the game. Riot first teased the upcoming changes in the Season 2021 video. However, besides that small teaser, there wasn’t any information regarding this update.

But now, League of Legends’ Product Lead of Competitive Gameplay and Behavioral Systems, Cody “Riot Codebear” Germain has finally shared a new dev blog titled Progression Identity Changes. And in the dev blog, he shared all the upcoming changes that are coming to League of Legends.

“With the intent to add more Progression Identity elements in the future to better show off who you are, it’s essential that each unique item we add fits with the intended League of Legends style and meet our visual quality bars for both fantasy and clarity,” Riot Codebear said.

According to Riot Codebear, they are trying to give the best Progression Identity choices possible so that players can show off their personal League brand more clearly and the changes can refresh some of League’s core identity features.

Here are some of the changes that Riot is currently working on:

Identity Customization

With this new Identity Customization feature, League players will be able to select some of the borders more clearly. Furthermore, it will also allow players to pick the borders, icons, and a few new personalization options. Identity Customization is set to release by the end of 2021.

New UI Updates

One of the major changes of this Progression Identity is the client’s new UI design. Riot is currently working on cleaning up some of the old and untouched styles so that they can bring the aging art style into 2021.

In the above-proposed concept, Riot is focusing on clear core identity features like ranked emblems, level, name, and icons.

Moreover, they are also trying to reduce the noise of some of the more distinct elements like unused banners in “gameflow screens” and “clunky footer UI” in the client.

Ranked Emblems and Regalia

Riot is also updating the borders of each rank.

“As such, when approaching what an updated style of Ranked identity looks like, our primary goal is to make sure that we’re not diminishing the sense of value and achievement, no matter what the tier,” Riot on the new Ranked Emblems and Regalia.

In this potential design, Riot is attempting to remove the complex texture and faction alignment that you see with current regalia options.

Prestige Levels

With this new update, players will be able to select any of the level borders they feel resonate with. Moreover, Riot is also experimenting with these levels so that it can go in a similar direction to ranked in the form of “wing elements.”

New Content Types

Lastly, Riot is also looking to include additional, earnable unique content types that players can display as a piece of their identity including Titles, Identity Crystals, and Banner accents.

Release Date

There’s still no official date on when these new Progression Identity changes are going live but Riot did mention that it might release by the end of 2021—possibly during the 2022 Preseason.
