Hextech Chests are making a triumphant return in the upcoming patch.

One of the biggest parts of League of Legends as a free-to-player was probably the Hextech Chest. Introduced alongside the Hextech Crafting system, these chests allowed players to earn Champion Shards, Emotes, Ward Skins, and even Ultimate Skins, simply by playing the game.

So it was no surprise that players were angry that Riot removed one of the best ways of earning free rewards.

Starting in late 2024, Riot started limiting the way players could earn Chests. They changed how players would be able to earn chests and even made it much harder. However, a couple of weeks ago Riot permanently removed the ability to earn them.

This resulted in a massive backlash from the community. It was so bad that players started to dislike bombing their videos and players even started commenting “Where’s my Hextech Chest, Riot?” in videos on the League of Legends YouTube channel, in protest.

Riot initially defended the change, stating that Hextech Chests were unsustainable in the long run and that they planned to offer meaningful rewards through other means. However, That was not the response players were looking for and even League of Legends content creators started chiming in. Players even planned to boycott the game on February 28th. This was the first time League of Legends players unanimously banded together and protested one of Riot’s bad decisions.

As a result, Riot announced today that Hextech Chests will be making a return in the upcoming patch

Hextech Chests Returns

In the latest Dev Update video named, Hextech Chests, Rewards & More, Riot announced the return of the Hextech Chests.

Starting with 2025 Season 1 Act 2, which starts on March 5th, players will be able to earn Chests from the battle pass. These chests will be replacing the battle pass skins and there will be 8 earnable free chests and keys per Act.

There will also be two additional chests earnable through the updated Honor System. In addition, Riot will also be consolidating all Key Fragments into Keys, rounding up leftover fragments in your inventory.

Moreover, Riot has announced that Your Shop is coming back in Patch 25.06, and Blue Essence Emporium will return in Patch 25.07.
