Bungie has a clear message for Destiny 2 fans worried about the franchise’s future. Buying Marathon out of obligation isn’t something the studio is asking you to do. Head of Product Josh Deane says Bungie’s Destiny plans do not depend on Marathon’s success.
His clarification follows concerns over comments in Bungie’s October community update, where he discussed how Marathon’s recovery could help the studio move forward.
In brief:
- Josh Deane says Bungie’s Destiny plans are not contingent on Marathon.
- He told fans to avoid buying Marathon as a donation to support Destiny.
- The clarification followed Bungie’s call for its two communities to come together.
- Bungie previously acknowledged that Marathon attracted fewer players than it had hoped.
Bungie Says Destiny’s Future Does Not Depend on Marathon

In Bungie’s October 29 community update, Deane encouraged Destiny and Marathon fans to support each other. He also described Marathon becoming sustainable as an important part of helping Bungie move toward its future.
Some players read those comments as a suggestion that Destiny’s comeback depended on Marathon doing well. Deane subsequently addressed that interpretation on social media, as reported by GamesRadar.
“In no way is the Destiny plan contingent upon Marathon.”
Deane also took responsibility for the confusion surrounding his earlier wording and encouraged players to spend their time with games that interest them.
“Don’t Buy Marathon as a Donation”

Deane was equally direct when addressing fans who might purchase Marathon purely to help Bungie deliver more Destiny content.
“Don’t buy Marathon as a donation or offer anything else. It’s our job to show up for you.”
For Destiny players, that removes the pressure to buy into another game simply because they want their favorite series to have a future. Bungie has to give players a reason to return through the games themselves.
Marathon’s Player Struggles Provide the Backdrop

Bungie previously admitted that Marathon “did not reach as many players as we had hoped.” That makes its upcoming updates important as the studio works to rebuild interest.
Bungie’s October update outlines work on both franchises, including Marathon: Symbiosis in December and Destiny 2’s content unvaulting project. The studio is targeting February for its next major Destiny communication.
