In Ghost of Yōtei, you play as Atsu, an Onryō who is determined to get revenge and justice in the snowy realms of Ezo. As she unlocks additional weapons, styles, and supernatural powers, it becomes very important to make the perfect loadout in order to beat different enemies and elite bosses.

Weapon Types & Their Role (Overview)

From what’s been revealed so far, Atsu’s arsenal includes (or is expected to include) the following weapon types:

  • Katana (single blade)
  • Dual Katanas (dual wield)
  • Spear / Yari
  • Ōdachi (two-handed greatsword)
  • Kusarigama (chain & sickle)
  • Bow / Ranged weapons (Hankyu, yumi)
  • Tanegashima / Matchlock rifle (firearm)

Tier List: Best Weapons by Versatility & Power

Below is a preliminary tier list based on what we’ve seen so far.

TierWeapon TypeStrengths / Why It Ranks HereWeaknesses / When to Switch
SDual KatanasExceptional speed, staggering power in agile combos, good for crowd control and dash attacks.Less reach than spear/ōdachi; may struggle vs heavy armored foes.
AKatanaSolid all-rounder, good speed + balance, reliable in nearly all encounters.Doesn’t outclass specialized weapons in their niche.
AŌdachiHigh damage per hit, crushes defense, good for breaking stances.Slower speed, vulnerable to flanking or faster foes.
BSpear / YariGreat reach, control over spacing, effective vs multiple enemies.Less raw burst damage; weaker vs very heavy foes.
BBow / RangedEnables safe engagement, kiting, interrupting enemy abilities.Weapon damage is lower; limited ammo or reload time.
CKusarigamaUseful for crowd control or mixing range + melee, tricky chain attacks.Harder to master, lower damage per strike, vulnerable during recovery.
CMatchlock Rifle / FirearmExcellent at range, for opening strikes, potential stealth or burst openings.Long reload or misfire penalties; weak in close melee.

Here are suggested build archetypes for various playstyles. Combine these with gear, skills, and perks to amplify them.

  • When to Use: Best for agile play, hit-and-run tactics, fighting agile enemies, and dodging heavy attacks.

2. Heavy Striker (Ōdachi / High-Damage Focus)

  • Core Weapon(s): Ōdachi as main; use Katana for faster phases.
  • Skills / Perks: Increased damage, stagger/posture break, strong finishers.
  • Gear Synergy: Heavier armor for defense; buffs to poise or damage mitigation.
  • When to Use: Great vs bosses, armored foes, and in phases where you can control space.

3. Tactical Pole & Reach (Spear/Yari)

  • Core Weapon(s): Spear / Yari; secondary Katana.
  • Skills / Perks: Piercing damage, reach extension, control with sweeps.
  • Gear Synergy: Moderate armor; buffs to reach or crowd suppression.
  • When to Use: When facing enemy groups or ranged/mounted foes.

4. Ghost Sniper / Hybrid (Firearm + Blade)

  • Core Weapon(s): Tanegashima rifle; backup Katana or Dual.
  • Skills / Perks: Damage boost for ranged, reload speed, stealth/opening fire buffs.
  • Gear Synergy: Armor with stealth or reload reductions.
  • When to Use: When you want to start engagements or finish weakened foes safely.

5. Crowd Controller (Kusarigama & Mixing Styles)

  • Core Weapon(s): Kusarigama; secondary Spear or Katana.
  • Skills / Perks: Chain attacks, entangle, trap combos, interrupt effects.
  • Gear Synergy: Support buffs, slow, or control effects.

You can mix and combine weapons as you unlock more of them and improve your skills. For example, you can switch between a firearm and dual blades for melee follow-up.
