Best Monk Build: Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3)

Learn about the best subclasses, armories, skills, and spells for the Monk class in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The Monk class is a unique one in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, it might seem new to some folks as it was not included in the Early Access version due to Larian Studios’ reluctance to disclose details; they did a good job, I would say. This build, especially, can go hand in hand with Rogue and Ranger. As Monks practice the Way of the Shadow, relying on stealth and bare fists comes naturally.

In this build guide, we will talk about being the best Monk build with a high stat in Intelligence that can cast any spell. We will also talk about the abilities in detail and where you can think of spending your AP more. Without further ado, let’s jump right into it.

Best Monk Build in BG3

Best Monk Build: Baldur's Gate 3 (BG3)
monk class

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a Shadow subclass for Monks, allowing them to move unseen and operate in the shadows. This class, a cross between melee fighter and ranged caster showcases the strength of the full version, showcasing the class’s potential. Moreover, it offers a significant advantage by reducing time spent searching for powerful weapons.

Best Ability Points Assignment for Monk

  • Strength: 10
  • Dexterity: 16
  • Constitution: 12
  • Intelligence: 10
  • Wisdom: 15
  • Charisma: 10

With a Strength of 10, a Monk is proficient in combat with a Dexterity of 16, a Constitution of 12, and an Intelligence of 10. They prioritize keen awareness, Wisdom marks 15, and Charisma scores 10. This character combines flexibility and strategic thought, emphasizing quickness of movement and calmness under fire, despite lacking powerful statistics.

Best Monk Race

A Monk should prioritize Dexterity and Wisdom, as we have already mentioned in the stats. And for that, Wood Elf offers the most unique benefits that complement the Monk’s playstyle. With an additional +2 to Dexterity, Wood Elf boosts armor class and hit chance, while their Wisdom bonus puts an impact on saving throws against Monk effects like Stunning Strike. Moreover, Wood Elf’s ability score and movement speed can be improved further in the late game.

Best Monk Subclass

The Way of the Open Palm may seem the most logical path for a Monk to specialize in unarmed combat. However, after reaching Level 3, the Way of the Four Elements is the most effective path for transforming a Monk into a formidable spellcaster and ranged attacker.

This path emphasizes the development of the Monk’s ranged and spellcasting abilities, allowing them to apply pressure effectively across battle zones. You can also think of The Way of the Elements as it can also empower the Monk to do damage from a greater distance using fire and ice.

Best Monk Equipment

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Monk character is the least complicated due to their lack of armor or shield requirements. They possess the necessary stats and proficiencies to use weapons, making them suitable for those who prefer not to rely on their fists in fights.

Best Monk Progression

  • Level 1: Deft Strikes, Ki
  • Level 2: Step of the Wind: Dash, Unarmoured Movement
  • Level 3: Deflect Missiles
  • Level 4: Slow Fall
  • Level 5: Stunning Strike, Extra Attack
  • Level 6: Improved Unarmoured Movement

Best Monk Features

Martial arts training equips Monks with Dexterity and adaptability, enabling them to deal significant damage without relying on massive armaments. Their Ki ability grants them Ki points, which can be used in skills like Stunning Strike. Monks support Unarmored Defense, based on their high Dexterity and Wisdom scores, making them more agile and difficult to hit in combat. They are also experts in Slow Fall, enabling them to safely jump from great heights, aiding in exploring dangerous locations, and quickly engaging and withdrawing from fighting situations.

UPDATE: PATCH #01 (25.08.23)

Players can interact with Astarion and the Moonrise Towers, and the Zhentarim at Goblin Camp are more tolerant. The Digital Deluxe DLC has been updated, improving visuals, character models, and gameplay.
