The wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 has been painfully long, but Xbox has finally given fans a rare update on Bethesdaโs next massive RPG. According to Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, the long-awaited fantasy sequel is not only in active development, but it is apparently already looking impressive behind closed doors.
Speaking in a new interview with Variety, Booty said he recently visited Bethesda, sat down with Todd Howard, and saw The Elder Scrolls VI running. His verdict was simple. The game โlooks amazingโ and is โcoming along well.โ
Matt Booty Says The Elder Scrolls 6 Looks Amazing
Booty explained that Xbox and Bethesda are trying to be careful with when they show the game publicly. According to him, there is always pressure to reveal exciting projects early, but showing a game also creates an expectation that it is coming soon.
Booty said Microsoft wants to wait until the right moment, when the team can show the game properly and make a meaningful promise to players.
On one hand, it confirms that the game is playable internally and progressing well. On the other hand, it sounds like Bethesda is still not ready to bring it back to the spotlight with a trailer, gameplay demo, release window, or platform details.
The absence of The Elder Scrolls VI from Xboxโs latest showcase did not go unnoticed. The game has become one of the most infamous no-shows in gaming, especially since Bethesda first announced it all the way back in 2018 with a short teaser trailer.
Bootyโs comments suggest that Microsoft has learned from the reaction to early reveals. The original Elder Scrolls 6 announcement gave fans reassurance that the franchise had a future, but it also created years of waiting with almost no concrete updates.
Now, Xbox seems to be taking a more cautious approach. Rather than dropping another vague teaser, the company wants the next reveal to feel substantial. That likely means fans should not expect to see The Elder Scrolls 6 again until Bethesda is much closer to showing real gameplay.
Bethesda Is Now Focused on The Elder Scrolls 6
The good news is that Bethesda Game Studios appears to be much deeper into development than it was a few years ago. Todd Howard has previously said that the majority of the studio is now working on The Elder Scrolls 6, following the launch of Starfield.
Now, with Starfield out and its post-launch support underway, the studioโs biggest RPG team has shifted toward Tamriel again.
Even after eight years of waiting, The Elder Scrolls 6 remains one of the most anticipated RPGs in the world. Skyrimโs legacy is still massive, and fans have spent years speculating about the setting, mechanics, factions, world design, and how Bethesda will modernize the series for a new generation.
The Elder Scrolls VI is real, it is playable inside Bethesda, and according to one of Xboxโs top executives, it already looks amazing. Now the waiting game continues until Bethesda is finally ready to properly reveal the next chapter of Tamriel.
