Dispatch, the hit episodic superhero narrative by AdHoc Studio, has won praise for its sharp writing, character depth, and bold adult-oriented humour. As it prepares to launch on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 after successful releases on PC and PS5, fans have flagged a major difference in how the game appears on Nintendo platforms.
Developers have now officially confirmed that the Switch versions will include mandatory censorship, altering some aspects of the experience compared with other platforms.
Dispatchโs Switch Version Will Be Censored
AdHoc Studio addressed the situation ahead of Dispatchโs Switch release. According to the developers, they engaged with Nintendo to ensure the title complies with the platformโs content requirements. In doing so, certain content that could be visually explicit will be covered by default. This decision wasnโt a removal of scenes or story elements, but rather a change in how content is presented so that it meets the criteria for release on Nintendoโs consoles. The studio emphasised that the core narrative and gameplay experience remain identical to other versions.
What Censorship Looks Like on Switch
On PC and PS5, Dispatch includes a โVisual Censorshipโ setting that allows players to toggle coverage of explicit visuals themselves. That option is absent on both Switch and Switch 2. Instead, the visual censorship is permanently enabled, meaning things like nudity or provocative gestures are covered with black bars automatically. Scenes featuring these elements still appear in the game, but players cannot choose to turn the censorship off.
Notably, the profanity toggle remains available on Switch, so players who want the gameโs full language content can still hear characters swear. However, audio in certain scenes has also been muted where explicit visual content would otherwise conflict with Nintendoโs platform standards.
Mixed Reaction From The Community
The announcement has sparked debate among players and commentators. Many point out that the change feels inconsistent with the gameโs ESRB Mature rating and Nintendoโs increasingly relaxed stance toward adult content on its store. Critics argue that mandatory censorship alters the way the game was originally designed to be experienced, even if the narrative itself isnโt cut. Players have also noted that the Switch eShop artwork for Dispatch was censored compared to other platforms before the release, and some regional differences in presentation have emerged.
A Scaled Back Experience
Despite the changes, those interested in playing Dispatch on Switch can expect the same eight episodes, choice-driven storytelling, and strategic call-handling gameplay that made the game a critical and commercial success. The censorship mostly affects how certain scenes look on screen, not what happens in the story or how decisions shape the narrative.
