Yes, you can go to jail in Starfield. There are a few known crimes for which you can get arrested in Starfield. The crimes are:

  • Killing harmless characters
  • Looting
  • Hacking
  • Contraband
  • Trespassing

If you get caught doing any of these crimes, you will be taken to jail by the authorities. So, the easiest way to avoid jail in Starfield is by not committing these crimes. Though it’s understandable you might need to do some of these sometimes, just don’t get caught. Going to jail will result in you losing any item or material you got through the crime and also some of your XP.

If you are caught doing any crime, the enforcers will come to arrest you. You have three choices once they have come to you: Pay a fine, Cooperate with them and get arrested, or Resist and fight with them.

Use Shielded Cargo Hold

If you have stolen or received any Contraband for your ship, there’s a huge possibility you will get caught if it gets identified during a scan. Contrabands are illegal items and will generally be marked yellow in your inventory. To hide these Contrabands from the enforcers, you should have a Shielded Cargo Hold in your ship. You can buy a ship installed with a Shielded Cargo Hold from Red Mile in Porrima III or install the part in your ship separately from Lon. Completing the Mantis side quest will also reward you with the item.

You can also install the Scan Jammer on your ship. These items will considerably reduce the risk of you getting caught in the scan, but there’s no guarantee of safety.

Persuasion Traits

The persuasion trait can be helpful during many instances in the game. It can also help you to negotiate and persuade the enforcers to accept your bribe or at least lower the fine.
