Sony has reportedly moved against Overdrive, an unofficial storefront offering free downloads of more than 1,600 PS4 and PS5 games. The original project disappeared from GitHub, and the app reportedly stopped working. However, copies began appearing within hours, giving the shutdown a short-lived impact.

In brief:

  • Overdrive offered unauthorized downloads of PS4 and PS5 games.
  • Sony reportedly sent its developers a cease-and-desist letter.
  • The original GitHub repository disappeared, but copies quickly surfaced.
  • Sonyโ€™s involvement remains publicly unconfirmed.

What Was the Overdrive PS5 Piracy Store?

Overdrive gave players with jailbroken PS5 consoles a convenient interface for finding and downloading games. Basically, it brought access to pirated titles directly onto the console.

According to reports, its catalog included games such as Marvelโ€™s Spider-Man 2 and Cyberpunk 2077. Integration with a separate tool also allowed downloaded games to appear on the PS5 home screen, making the experience more accessible to users.

Oliver Darko claimed on October 13 that Sony Interactive Entertainmentโ€™s lawyers had sent Overdriveโ€™s developers a cease-and-desist letter.

The original repository returned a 404 error. However, neither Sony nor the developers had publicly confirmed the alleged notice. The exact reason behind the removal therefore remains unclear, including whether it followed a copyright complaint or a decision by the maintainers.

Unsurprisingly, Forks and re-releases quickly appeared, including versions dated October 13 with bug fixes. That leaves the projectโ€™s long-term availability unresolved despite the original repository disappearing.

The wider backdrop is a growing PS5 jailbreak scene. And Overdriveโ€™s popularity is due to the Relapse exploit, which expanded support to newer console firmware. That broader compatibility helped draw attention to an app built around easy access to unauthorized game downloads.

Removing a prominent storefront can disrupt access, but copies of an already distributed project create an ongoing enforcement challenge. Now for Sony, the next question is how widely those replacements spread and whether further takedowns follow.
