Reports of PS5 disc games asking players to update their consoles are raising concerns about how much control physical-game owners have over their purchases. Buying a disc should make returning to a favorite game straightforward, so an unexpected software requirement can be frustrating.
Sony confirms that some game discs can require a later system-software version. However, the available evidence doesnโt establish that Sony has introduced a new requirement forcing every PS5 disc owner onto the latest firmware.
In brief:
- Sony documents that certain discs can require newer PS5 system software.
- Sonyโs firmware 14.20 notes mention improvements to messages and screen usability.
- A connection between the reported disc problems and recent jailbreak developments remains unverified.
PS5 Disc Games Can Require Newer Firmware

PlayStationโs official support page explains that inserting a disc requiring a later system-software version can trigger an update notification. It also warns that some applications and content may be unavailable until the consoleโs software is updated.
So, that means owning the physical disc doesnโt guarantee compatibility with every older firmware version. However, a game requiring a particular software version doesnโt establish that it must always run on Sonyโs newest release.
Sony also supports installing firmware through a USB drive after downloading the official update on a computer. The console itself therefore doesnโt have to download that update directly, although obtaining the file still requires internet access.
PS5 Firmware 14.20 and Prolapse Are Separate Developments
Sony lists firmware 26.07-14.20.00 as improving messages and usability on some screens. Its published notes donโt announce a new disc-authentication requirement or identify Prolapse as the reason for the update.
Meanwhile, PlayStation researcher Jose Coixao has announced that Prolapse is coming to firmware 14.00 and 14.10, according to a mirrored copy of his public posts. That announcement doesnโt establish a connection to the reported disc-launch problems.
Playden is also a real homebrew project for playing Windows games on a jailbroken PS5 through a separate runtime. Its documentation supports that general capability, but the reviewed material doesnโt substantiate the specific Cyberpunk 2077 example.
Physical Game Ownership Needs Clear Offline Requirements
The ownership concern deserves attention. If accessing a purchased game depends on downloading additional software, preserving the disc alone may leave players without everything they need years later.
Publishers should clearly explain what works directly from a disc, which firmware it requires, and which features depend on servers. A complete, playable offline version gives collectors a much stronger reason to trust a physical release.
