Salt and Sacrifice is the sequel to the Salt and Sanctuary. One thing the game doesn’t do is explain anything. So, the co-op can be a chor to figure out. Here we will guide you on setting up all types of co-op play in Salt and Sacrifice.

Salt and Sacrifice take a lot of inspiration from the souls series. Then it brings them to a 2D Metroidvania style. This melding of genres is what makes this game unique from the rest. And there are always some challenges you will need to overcome.

But it also incorporates one of the more confusing elements from the Souls series, which is the co-op play confusion. If you are a souls fan, you will know how confusing things can get if you want to play co-op. And this game is also similar.

There are several types of co-op play, and each needs its own item and functions differently. Fortunately, they are not too hard to understand. So we bring you this guide to show you how to play every type of co-op in Salt and Sacrifice.

How to Play Local Co-Op in Salt and Sacrifice

Salt and Sacrifice features both local co-op and online co-op. Within the two, a local co-op is significantly easier to set up. Follow these steps to set up local Co-Op play:

  1. Open your game.
  2. Go to the Main Menu.
  3. Connect a 2nd Controller.
  4. Press any button on the 2nd Controller.
  5. A menu will appear on the right side to let players know.
  6. From the new menu, you can create/load a 2nd character.

After that, you can start the game with both of your characters in a local Co-Op play.

How to Play Online Co-Op (2 Player) in Salt and Sacrifice

In Salt and Sacrifice, you can set up online play to play with your friends or random people. And like typical souls like fashion, you need to set them up differently depending on whether you want to play with a friend or random. Here is how you do it:

Online Play With a Friend

If you want to play Salt and Sacrifice online with a friend, first, you need to complete the tutorial and reach Pardoner’s Vale. From there, here is how you can set it up:

  1. Go to Pardoner’s Vale.
  2. Go to the bottom of the area.
  3. At the very bottom, you will come across a signboard.
  4. Interact with the board to initiate an online play.

After interacting with the board, you will have two options:

  • Host a game: Here, you create a lobby to play in.
  • Join a game: Here, you join a lobby that the host has created.

To Host a Game: Interact with the Signboard. Now, use the runes on the Signboard to create a password, then select the host option.

To Join a Game: Interact with the Signboard. Then, use the password provided by the host (in this case, your friend) and select the join option.

This is how you can play with your friend online in Salt and Sacrifice.

Online Play with Random

Salt and Sacrifice doesn’t make things easy when it comes to playing online with strangers. You will need different items to Host and Join a random player’s game. So we will cover the Hosting and Joining in different sections.

Hosting Random Games

If you want to be the one who is hosting a game for random players to join, you will need two items. The first one is a “Guiltless Shard,” and the second one is a “Golden Candle.” Guiltless Shard is essential for removing Spellmark, which you need to do to host a co-op session with random. Golden Candle is used to initiate the session.

Golden Candle is found inside a chest in Root-Ceil Cavern. To reach the Root-Ceil Cavern, head left from the Ashbourne Village until you reach the first cave entrance. Enter the cave, and you will find yourself in the Root-Ceil Carven.

From there, explore the area, and you will find an exit on the middle right side of the cave. Go through the exit to find the Golden Candle inside a chest.

As for the Guiltless Shard, they are dropped by the Mage’s minions. So, they are pretty easy to farm.

After you have both items, use a Shard to get rid of the Spellmark, then use the Golden Candle to initiate the Co-Op.

Joining Random Games

Joining random games also needs an item in Salt and Sacrifice. But it is not the same items as the hosting ones. You will need to “Pale Candle” item to join a random game. This item is locked in an area behind the door on the right of the initial spawn point.

You will need a certain number of mage hearts to open the door. There is a total of five mages in the Ashbourne Village. Defeat the mages and collect mage hearts until you can open the door.

After you can open the door, go through it and drop down the stairs. There you will find another green door. Go through that green door and keep dropping down until you see an exit on the left of the screen.

Once you have reached the exit on the left, exit the cave, and you will find yourself in the Greymoss Mire. There you need to grapple on the tree to reach an NPC. Talk to the NPC, and he will return to the Pardoner’s Vale.

All you have to do is return to Pardoner’s Vale and go to the house right under the cats. Inside the house, you will find the same NPC. This time, talking to him will give you the Pale Candle that you need to join random games.

You can use this Pale Candle now to join random games at any time.

How to Play 3 Player Co-Op in Salt and Sacrifice

In Salt and Sacrifice, a three-player co-op is pretty limited, but you can still play three players if you want to. Follow these steps to set up a three-player co-op session:

  1. Open the game.
  2. Join or Host a two-player Co-Op session through either local or online Co-Op.
  3. Now, go to an area that is not Pardoner’s Vale.
  4. All three players have to be in the same area.
  5. Make sure the Host has used a Shard to become Guiltless and used the Golden Candle.
  6. Then, all three players have to go to the settings menu and access network settings.
  7. Here, everyone has to put the same network password.
  8. Lastly, the one who is not in the co-op session has to use the Pale Candle.
  9. Using the Pale Candle will make the third player enter the co-op session with the other two players.

This way, all three players can be in the same game and play together.
