Big news has come out about the Riot MMO as they are hitting the reset button and going back to the drawing board.

When Riot announced their MMO, it was a shining light for fans of the genre and the Runeterra Universe alike. Just like World of Warcraft revolutionized the industry way back, this has the potential to do the same thing.

However, the whole prospective revolution will have to wait as the development of the Riot MMO has hit a snag. Marc Merrill, also known as Riot Tryndamere, has come out with an update on where the MMO is at. Thus, let’s talk about what he had to say and what the future of the Riot MMO is.

Marc Merrill’s Update On The Riot MMO

Marc Merrill made a long thread about the Riot MMO, and he said a lot there, too. Here are some summarized points on what he said.

  • Riot is still actively working on the MMO.
  • The MMO ventured into a different direction a while ago under Vijay Thakkar’s management.
  • Riot wants to create a truly unique MMO and not a reskinned one that just has a different story with the same mechanics.
  • Fabrice Condominas will be the new Executive Producer, and Vijay Thakkar will be the new Technical Director.
  • Riot will be “going dark” about the MMO for likely several years.

There are many things Marc Merrill said that I personally like. Riot wants to create a completely different MMO, and that comes with its set of challenges. Also, it is always better to have a change in direction rather than releasing something that feels undercooked or lacking.

On the flip side, this does put the future of the Riot MMO in a little bit of darkness. To be silent about the game for potentially several years means that we have no idea when this game will come out, never mind what it looks like.

However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel with new leadership in place and Riot’s commitment to making something truly great. It is prompt to also state that Riot does not miss on games, and every release they have made has had success on many different fronts.

What Does This Mean For The Riot MMO?

While some of it was answered by Marc Merrill himself, let’s look into the future as to what we could know about the Riot MMO. His statement tells us that Riot wants to do something new, so it definitely means a different kind of gameplay and something unique to the MMO itself.

Also, we already know the scale of the world of Runeterra, so with all of this extra time of going back to the drawing board, they could very likely expand the scale of the game more than what it was planned to be.

Marc Merrill also said that they retooled the technical side of things, so that will be a different look.

However, we will only know about the game in a year, at least, and likely even a few. So, hang tight and wait for Riot to give us some nuggets on how things are going. Hopefully, this new direction will prove fruitful for fans and devs alike in the future.
