Riot Games overhauls VALORANT Esports economy. Teams face a $400k content creation cut, and new monetization strategies emerge.
According to recent leaks, competitive VALORANT will undergo some economic changes. Riot Games plans to reshape its financial relationship with VCT teams. Sources close to Sheep Esports have revealed that in 2025, Riot will cut its “incentive program” for content creation. If this happens, Riot could slash up to $400,000 in annual payouts for each team.
Now, we all know the VCT features 12 teams across four regions. If Riot cuts $400,000 from each team, they can save an estimated $19.2 million per year. This cancellation has caught many teams off guard, as most of them had planned long-term budgets based on this expected income.

What Is Riot Cooking?
While Riot plans to maintain that teams will continue to create content, they don’t expect the same high-quality content as before. What will happen to the current content strategies? Only the future will tell.
However, Riot isn’t just tightening its belt. The company is pivoting towards increased monetization through digital items. Every team can expect an almost guaranteed payout of $300,000 to $400,000 from cosmetic sales. Additionally, Riot will introduce new weapon skins for all 48 VCT teams.
Leo Faria, Global Head of VALORANT Esports, recently confirmed the distribution of the Champion Bundle. Half of the sales are divided into 60 parts. Of those, 44 parts go to all teams, and the remaining 16 parts go to the teams that qualify for the tournament. This system aims to reward sporting success and support teams through additional revenue streams.
In a statement to Sheep Esports, Riot emphasized its commitment to team support:
We adjust the team payment structure every year. Going into 2025, we’re putting a bigger focus on digital items, since those are performing incredibly well thanks to the generosity of our fans. All in all, we expect significant growth in the total amount of money paid to teams by Riot, continuing the growth trajectory from the past three years.

Is It The End or A New Beginning?
The reaction from teams has been mixed. Some see the potential in this system, while others are concerned about the immediate impact.
This restructuring raises important questions about the VALORANT Esports scene:
- Can teams keep producing the same level of content without direct financial support?
- Will the increased focus on digital items make up for the loss of guaranteed payouts?
- How will this change affect smaller organizations with less strong infrastructure?
As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Riot Games and the VCT teams. We will find out how they deal with the situation. The success or failure of this bold move will determine the future of VALORANT Esports.
