Rod of Ages, the premier scaling mage item, is getting some much-needed changes.

The Rod of Ages is one of League of Legends’ most recognizable items. It was added to the game in 2009 and quickly became a favorite of champions like Ryze and Kassadin. But, due to its niche nature, it was removed from the game in Patch 10.23.

However, this Preseason Riot chose to bring back Rod of Ages after a two-year absence. The new Rod of Ages is still a scaling item and has many similarities to its predecessor; however, it now has the Mythic item status, granting it additional stat increases and a new Mythic passive.

Despite this, the item was very mediocre and needed some additional buffs. As a result, Riot dropped its pricing from 3200 gold to 2800 gold in Patch 12.22. Sadly, it wasn’t enough, and Riot intends to buff it once again in Patch 13.1.

Spideraxe30 recently posted the Rod of Ages changes to his Twitter page.

Rod of Ages Changes

  • Damage to Mana conversion reduced from 8% to 7%.
  • Mana to healing conversion increased from 20% to 25%.
  • Max healing per cast increased from 15 to 20.
  • Bonus Movement Speed increased from 25% to 35%
  • Bonus Movement Speed duration increased from 2 seconds to 3 seconds.
  • The Movement Speed threshold was reduced from 250 to 200.

One of the most significant issues with Rod of Ages was its early game weakness. Riot is attempting to mitigate this by providing greater sustain during the laning phase. They are increasing the item’s healing quite a bit and are also increasing the movement speed duration.

The changes should help with some of its early-game problems and improve the late-game.

Overall it is a change in the right direction.

The Catalyst of Aeons Changes

  • Damage to Mana conversion reduced from 8% to 7%.
  • Mana to healing conversion increased from 20% to 25%.
  • Max healing per cast increased from 15 to 20.

As Catalyst of Aeons builds into the Rod of Ages, it will also receive some changes. It, like Rod of Ages, will also have its healing increased by a bit. Because Catalyst of Aeons is an early rush item for many mages, boosting its sustain will help their laning phase significantly.

Release Date

Changes to the Rod of Ages will be coming to live servers in Patch 13.1, which is set to be released in early 2023.

Although the precise release date is uncertain, it is expected on January 11th.
