Resident Evil 2 Remake Is Officially the Best Selling RE Game Ever, Beating Resident Evil 5 for Good

It took seven years, but the argument is over. Capcom’s latest quarterly sales chart has pushed the Resident Evil 2 remake to 19.75 million units, and Resident Evil 5 no longer has a mathematical path to staying ahead of it. The 2009 co-op shooter held the franchise crown for the better part of two decades. It does not hold it anymore, and this time there is no version of the numbers where it does.

In Brief:

  • Resident Evil 2 (2019) has hit 19.75 million lifetime units according to Capcom’s Q1 FY2026 unit sales ranking, making it the best-selling Resident Evil game in history
  • Resident Evil 5 sat at 19.01 million as of March 31 and failed to chart in the quarter’s top ten, capping it at roughly 19.719 million at absolute best
  • RE2 is now on track to become the first Resident Evil game ever to cross 20 million units, and it will get there before RE5 does
  • The Resident Evil 4 remake was the quarter’s biggest gainer at 2.43 million units, pushing it to 16.04 million lifetime

Resident Evil 2 Remake Hits 19.75 Million Units

Capcom’s unit sales ranking for the quarter ending June 30, 2026 puts the Resident Evil 2 remake at 19.75 million units sold worldwide, with 1.42 million of those coming in the last three months alone. And that figure includes ports and re-releases across every platform the game has landed on since January 2019, which is the same accounting standard Capcom applies to everything else on the chart.

What makes that number remarkable is not just the total. It is the fact that a game from early 2019 is still moving well over a million copies a quarter in mid-2026. Most games get a launch spike, a couple of sale bumps, and then flatline. RE2 has been on a slow, steady climb for seven straight years, and it has never really stopped.

Resident Evil 5 Can No Longer Catch Up

Here is where the case becomes airtight. As of March 31, 2026, Capcom reported Resident Evil 5 at 19.01 million units.

Now look at the quarterly chart. Resident Evil 5 does not appear on it at all. The tenth spot belongs to Resident Evil 6 with 710,000 units sold in the quarter, which means RE5 sold fewer than that. Give it the most generous possible reading and assume it moved 709,000 copies. Add that to 19.01 million, and you land at 19.719 million.

Even in the best-case scenario for Resident Evil 5, the game with the co-op campaign and the boulder punch finishes behind the Raccoon City remake. And realistically, RE5 sold nowhere near 709,000 units last quarter. A seventeen-year-old game does not casually push three quarters of a million copies in three months without showing up on a chart somewhere. The real gap is almost certainly much wider than 31,000 units.

Resident Evil 2 Will Be the First RE Game to Reach 20 Million

No Resident Evil game has ever crossed 20 million units. Resident Evil 2 needs 250,000 more sales to get there.

At the pace it has been running, roughly 1.4 million units in the most recent quarter, RE2 should clear that bar comfortably before the next financial report. It may well have already done it while you were reading this. Resident Evil 5, sitting somewhere below 19.72 million and selling at a fraction of that rate, is going to be watching from behind.

So that literally means the first Resident Evil game to hit 20 million will be a remake of a PlayStation 1 title from 1998. There is something genuinely funny about that, and something that says a lot about how Capcom rebuilt this franchise.

Do not get too comfortable with the new number one, because the Resident Evil 4 remake is climbing faster than anything else in the catalogue. It sold 2.43 million units last quarter, more than any other Capcom title on the chart apart from the brand new Pragmata, and it now sits at 16.04 million lifetime.

If RE4 keeps that pace, it closes a 3.7 million unit gap in under two years. The remake of Resident Evil 2 might not get to enjoy the throne for very long, which would make the RE2 versus RE4 argument a sales debate as well as a quality one.

Seven years after launch, the remake nobody was certain Capcom could pull off is the biggest Resident Evil game ever made.
