Sony’s latest PlayStation State of Play had plenty of new games for fans to talk about, but a significant portion of the livestream chat was focused on something else entirely. Throughout the September 3 presentation, viewers repeatedly posted “NO DISC, NO BUY” in protest against Sony’s upcoming move away from physical PlayStation games.

In brief

  • PlayStation fans repeatedly spammed “NO DISC, NO BUY” during the September 3 State of Play.
  • The comments are part of the ongoing backlash against Sony ending physical disc production for new games.
  • Sony plans to stop producing discs for new PlayStation releases beginning in January 2028.
  • Similar protests have already appeared across previous PlayStation livestreams and social media posts.

“NO DISC, NO BUY” Takes Over PlayStation State of Play Chat

The slogan appeared repeatedly across the State of Play livestream, with reports noting that YouTube and Twitch chats were flooded with fans demanding Sony preserve physical games.

The campaign has quickly become one of the most recognizable responses to Sony’s controversial physical media decision. It was also prominent during the August 18 Phantom Blade Zero State of Play, where viewers similarly filled the chat and comments with disc emojis and messages supporting physical releases.

Sony officially announced in July that physical game disc production for all new PlayStation releases will end beginning in January 2028. Games released on disc before that cutoff will not be affected, but new titles launching afterward will be distributed digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers.

Sony says the decision reflects changing consumer habits, with digital media now significantly outpacing physical purchases. However, the announcement immediately sparked concerns among players about game preservation, resale, lending games, and long-term access to purchased titles.

The “NO DISC, NO BUY” slogan has spread beyond individual livestreams and can regularly be seen in responses to PlayStation announcements across social media.
