Mages will be receiving a new burst item called Caster’s Companion.
One of the biggest gripes among the Mage players was the lack of build diversity in League of Legends. Most of the items Mages had after the Item rework were very similar. They were more or less glorified damage items with not much utility or special effects.
Although there were some unique items, such as Horizon Focus, they weren’t enough to diversify Mage’s build paths. That’s why one of Riot’s biggest goals for this Preseason was to revamp the Mage itemization.
That said, the Preseason 2024 has arrived, and we are now able to see what Riot has been up to. Most of the Mage items have been revamped. Riot removed a lot of previous Mage items. Items such as Crown of the Shattered Queen, Everfrost, Leeching Leer, Demonic Embrace, Night Harvester, Luden’s Tempest, and Stopwatch were all removed.
We also got a bunch of new items too. Among these items is the Caster’s Companion, which will be the topic of this article.

Caster’s Companion
- Total Cost: 3000 gold
- Item Recipe: Lost Chapter + Hextech Alternator + 700 gold
- 90 Ability Power
- 20 Ability Haste
- 600 Mana
- Load: Gain a Shot Charge every 3 seconds, up to a maximum of 6.
- Fire: Damaging abilities consume all Shot charges to deal an additional 40 (+ 8% AP) magic damage to the target and one additional nearby target per charge. If there are insufficient targets in range, for each remaining Shot, repeat the damage on the primary target, dealing 35% of the damage.
Caster’s Companion is looking to be the primary burst option for most mages. The item grants a Shot Charge every three seconds, and if the user damages an enemy, the charge is consumed. The damage of the Shots depends on the amount of charges. The more charges, the more damage.
So, basically, this is the more multi-target version of Luden’s Tempest. However, it can act as a single target item ability.
Release Date
Caster’s Companion, along with all the new items, will arrive in League of Legends in Patch 14.1, scheduled to be released in early January.
