Here is a primer on what the MSI 2022 Format is.

11 Teams are joining MSI and 10 of them are currently in quarantine for attending the games on stage. Games will be held in 35 ping as RNG are not able to make it to Busan for the tournament. Hence, it is building up to be a very good tournament a level playing field that everyone can look forward to on. Let’s talk about the MSI rules for the different stages of the tournaments.

MSI 2022 Groups Stage

The group stages of MSI 2022 will be two groups of four teams and one group of three teams. The groups are well knowns at this point but let’s share the group and the teams in them to serve as a refresher.

  • Group A: T1, Saigon Buffalo, Team AZE, Detonation FocusMe
  • Group B: Royal Never Give Up, PSG Talon, Istanbul Wildcats, RED Canids
  • Group C: G2 Esports, Evil Geniuses, ORDER

Groups A and B will be playing double round robins while Group C will be playing a quadruple round-robin. All of the games will be best of one. From there, two teams from each group will qualify for the Rumble Stage. Busan Esports Arena will be the host for the Groups Stage from May 10th to May 15th.

MSI 2022 Rumble Stage and Knockouts Stage

The Rumble Stage will feature six teams in one group. These six teams will qualify from their respective groups with two teams coming from each group. Similar to the Groups Stage, the Rumble stage will be a double round-robin consisting of best of one games between the teams in the group. From there, the top 4 teams will qualify for the Knockouts Stage. The Rumble Stage will start from May 20th to May 24th.

The Knockouts Stage will feature a knockout format with two Semi-Finals and a Finals matchup. That will be held from May 27th to May 29th. That will be the conclusion of MSI 2022.

In Conclusion

The format is very similar to last year and Riot decided to run it back as it worked last year. Thus, there will unlikely be any format changes so we should expect a good international tournament. MSI 2022 is set to start on May 10th, 2022.
