Everything you need to know about Wounding in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Monster Hunter Wilds is the newest addition to the Monster Hunter series. And like with every new addition, it refreshes and enhances the gameplay that fans of the series love, by adding new mechanics, systems, etc.

Wounding is one such new mechanic, changing the way combat works. Wounds appear on a Monster’s body around their weak spots and areas that they have recently taken damage. As such, it opens up more strategies on how to take down a monster.

There are many intricacies in the Wounding Mechanic, and knowing how to take advantage of it will make you a much better hunter.

In this article, we dive into the Wounding Mechanic, taking a look at how it works, and how you can use it to optimize your Hunts.

What is the Wounding Mechanic in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Wounds create weak spots on Monsters, which, when attacked, result in more damage dealt. While some Monsters naturally have weak spots, opening up wounds creates more of them.

For example, while Doshaguma has a weak spot in its Belly, but has sturdy Forelegs. However, if you open up wounds in its Foreleg, it will take increased damage there.

How to Inflict Wounds

To open up Wounds, you’ll need to focus on a specific body part, i.e the part you want to wound.

Repeatedly attack that body part and you’ll see scratches start to appear, signalling that a wound is starting to open up.

You can use focus to aim your swings and strikes on that body part. You can also use focus mode to know when Wounds are ready to be destroyed.

Mounted attacks can also open up wounds. And since you can move around from spot to spot while mounted, you can open up multiple wounds in a single mount.

Furthermore, Tempered Monsters will have Tempered Wounds. That is, they will already have scars all over their body, signifying the numerous battles they’ve been in. You can attack these scars to reopen the wounds.

How to Destroy Wounds

While in Focus Mode, which you can enter by pressing LT/L2, Wounds will be highlighted in red.

Use Focus Strikes, using RB/R1, to attack and destroy the wounds. You can also use normal strikes but Focus Strikes will do the job quicker. Damage dealt to Wounds show up in orange numbers, indicating the increased Damage.

Once you damage a wound enough, you’ll destroy it, dealing damage to the monster and causing it to flinch, opening it up to all the combos you want to dish out.

Moreover, even after you destroy a wound, you can reopen it by attacking it again. However, it will take more time to be wounded than if you were to attack another spot.
