Everything you need to know about Tempered Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Monster Hunter Wilds brings back and updates the familiar and beloved gameplay loop of the Monster Hunter series.
Fight Monsters, use their scales and hides to make gear, fight stronger monsters, make stronger gear, and so on.
Moreover, it should come as no surprise that the Monsters themselves are the strongest aspect of the Monster Hunter series.
And Monster Hunter Wilds is no less than its predecessors in this department, showcasing a diverse range of monsters, each tougher than the last.
And the toughest of these monsters are Tempered Monsters, strong monsters that you’ll need to defeat to get the strongest weapons and armor in the game.
Below, we take a deep dive into Tempered Monsters, listing all of them, their weaknesses, and how you can track and identify them.
What Are Tempered Monsters
Tempered Monsters are significantly tougher versions of regular monsters. They deal more damage and have higher Health than regular monsters and are much more difficult to take down.
They only appear in High Rank and are a key part of the endgame grind.
Rewards for Defeating Tempered Monsters

Defeated Tempered Monsters drops Weapon Shards, which you can use to craft Artian Weapons, the strongest weapons in the game.
Moreover, Tempered Monsters are the only source of Hunter Symbols, which you need to craft the strongest weapons and armor.
The rarity of Weapon Shards and Tier of Hunter Symbols you get depends on the Tier of the Tempered Monster you defeat:
- Tier 1 Tempered Monsters:
- Damaged Weapon Shards and Hunter Symbol I.
- Tier 2 Tempered Monsters:
- Rusted Weapon Shards and Hunter Symbol II.
- Tier 3 Tempered Monsters:
- Ancient Weapon Fragments and Hunter Symbol III.
How to Identify Tempered Monsters

Tempered Monsters have a different shine on their hides and scales than regular monsters, having a pearly glint.
Moreover, they are covered in scars, as a result of the countless battles they’ve been in. You can also attack these scars to open up Tempered Wounds. Attacking these wounds deal increased damage and also flinch monsters out of their attacks.
Lastly, Tempered Monsters show up as purple icons on the map, after you track them by following purple scoutflies.

You’ll first encounter a Tempered Monster in Mission 4-3: Wyvern Spark and Rose Thorns, where an investigation leads to an encounter with a Tempered Lala Barina.
