Marathon’s Season 2 is only halfway through, and Bungie is already swinging at the one complaint that has followed this game since day one. Some people love the setting, the sound design, and the sweaty stealth horror running, but they do not love getting third-partied by a crew of Runners the second they open something interesting. The mid-season update has an answer for those players, and it arrives on July 21, 2026.

Vault Breaker Mode in Marathon

Vault Breaker is a fully PvE mode with no other players hunting you. It takes place inside Cryo Archive, and you can run it solo, as a duo, or with a full crew. You explore the endgame map and plunder its vaults without the threat of running into anybody else, and each vault gets progressively more challenging as you push toward the final vault and the mysterious entity waiting inside.

Bungie is dangling something at the end of the gauntlet and refusing to say what it is, which is very much on brand for a studio that once made an entire community solve an ARG just to unlock a map. The mode also folds in Cryo Archive’s Compiler boss fight, so this is not a lazy PvP subtraction job where they just turned the other players off.

Bungie is calling it experimental, which means it is being treated as a test rather than a permanent fixture. It is also a lot more fleshed out than Sponsored Survival, the PvP lite mode that launched with Season 2.

Marathon Vault Breaker Loot Rules, and Vault Data Explained

You need a special Sponsored Kit just to queue up, and you cannot extract with any gear or loot you find inside. Instead, you leave with a new currency called Vault Data. Vault Data can be spent on upgrading Vault Breaker Sponsored Kits or on gear you can actually take into other modes.

The reasoning is not hard to work out. Bungie has said the exfil restrictions exist so Vault Breaker loot does not seep into the main extraction economy. Fair enough. If you could farm a no-risk PvE playlist for endgame gear and then walk into a PvP raid fully kitted, the entire tension of the core mode falls apart within a week. Vault Breaker essentially runs its own separate ecosystem.

There are two tiers of Vault Data to earn:

  • Tier 1 Vault Data can be found in Vaults and then needs to be exfilled.
    • Tier One Vault Data is also awarded for killing a UESC Commander, and that reward is granted post-run, whether you successfully exfil or not.
  • Tier 2 Vault Data can only be earned from consecutive Vaults solved in the same run and then successfully exfilled. Youโ€™ll need to manage your time and routes wisely. This will be especially tough for solo Runners.

Armory Offers

The Armory features a variety of gear and items, including a daily rotating Deluxe weapon, Cryo Key Templates, Prestige Weapons, and more. Itโ€™s worth noting that some pinnacle rewards stock will remain fixed in number throughout the full event.

Hereโ€™s a quick look at how the weekly rotation breaks down:

  • Weekly Offers
    • Tier 1 Vault Data items will have limited weekly stock, depending on the item, with either 3x or 5x available per week.
    • Tier 2 Vault Data items will include higher-tier rewards with 1x limited stock per week, or players can convert that currency to Tier One at 5x per week.
  • Limited Offers
    • Prestige gear will be available and you can grab one of each during the event. Grab them while you can.

Note: Purchases made from the Weekly and Limited Offers apply only to standard Marathon activities. Only Kit Upgrades will alter your loadout in Vault Breaker.

Cradle Evolution System and All Other Mid-Season Changes

The second big pillar is the Cradle. The mid-season update brings the first iteration of the Cradle Evolution system, letting players who have maxed out their Cradle reset it back to zero in exchange for an extra maximum Energy point and unique cosmetics. Bungie noted that those cosmetics arrive later in the season but can be earned ahead of their in-game debut, and Cradle progression speed is also going up. The cosmetic rewards include several Runner shell styles.

As this is a prestige system, plain and simple, and the faster progression is the part that makes it viable. Nobody was going to reset a Cradle that took forever to build in the first place.

Beyond that, Bungie has promised various other quality of life, tuning, and other changes, including the addition of player profile stats. Balance changes and bug fixes are on the list as well, with more quality of life details to be shared closer to launch.

Codex Challenges and Rewards

  • Profile Background โ€“ UESC Command
  • Circuit Breaker Weapon Style โ€“ UESC Bulwark
  • Weapon Charm โ€“ USEC Control

ABOUT THE SPICY HANDGUN

It’s safe to say the D54 Battle Pistol made a wild impression in its Tau Ceti IV debut. Here’s the Mid-Season Update balance changes for the Battle Pistol:

  • D54 Battle Pistol
    • Reduced precision bonus multiplier from 1.5x to 1.38x
    • Reduced damage falloff range minimum and maximum across all stat tiers by 10%
      • Maximum 100 Range stat damage falloff minimum goes from 38 meters to 34 meters.
      • Maximum 100 Range stat damage falloff maximum goes from 72 meters to 64 meters.

ONE GRENADE FOR EACH HAND

Starting with the Mid-Season Update, we are making a dramatic change to how some throwables work prior to infilling to a run. On July 21st, Runners trying to load into a map will find themselves with an error preventing them from launching if they are holding more than the restricted limit of certain equipment in their backpack.

To start, Bungie is limiting Runners to only bring any combination of 2 Bubble Shields, Chem Grenades, EMP Grenades, Flechette Grenades, Frag Grenades, and Heat Grenades. This means you can only bring in 2 Frag Grenades at the start of a run, or maybe 1 Frag Grenade and 1 Bubble Shield. Either way, any items on this list will be limited to a combination of 2. While in a run, any additional grenades on this list that are scavenged are fair game.

So, this new infil restriction has two purposes: to reduce the efficacy of AOE grenade spam and to reduce the prevalence of Bubble Shields. We think grenades are in a good place damage-wise, but feedback is clear that spam is still an issue on Cryo and that Bubble Shields are flattening high-level combat.

Marathon Season 3 Release Date

Bungie also looked past the mid-season entirely. Marathon Season 3 kicks off on September 22, 2026, and it is bringing real content. Season 3 will add another Runner shell, a revamp of the starting map Perimeter, new enemies, encounters, and more.

Should You Come Back for the Marathon Mid-Season Update?

If the PvP pressure was the thing keeping you out, this is the most honest attempt Bungie has made at building you a door. Vault Breaker arrives at an important moment, with Sony having acknowledged that Bungie’s portfolio did not meet expectations even while committing to continued Marathon improvements. So, this is Bungie testing whether a bigger PvE audience actually exists around Marathon, and the answer arrives on July 21.
