Riot is finally updating the champion cost in the upcoming patch.
One of the biggest selling points of League of Legends as a game is its massive roster of champions. Over the game’s decade-long lifespan, it has released a total of 170 champions and each of these champions has their own unique abilities and playstyles.
However, not all champions are accessible from the get-go. Unlike many online games that give out their Heros/Champions for free, League requires players to purchase each separately. Each champion can be bought with either the free currency Blue Essence (BE) or the premium currency called Riot Points (RP).
That said, the game does hand out some beginner champions when a player makes a new account. However, players still have to buy the other 150+ champions, which could take up to 1-2 years for many.
Thus, players have been asking Riot for years to lower the champions’ pricing to improve the new player experience. Now after years, Riot is finally doing it.
Reduced Champion Cost
In the latest Dev Update video named, Hextech Chests, Rewards & More, Riot addressed the recent Hextech Chests controversy. They announced that Starting with 2025 Season 1 Act 2, which starts on March 5th, players will be able to earn Chests from the battle pass. These chests will be replacing the battle pass skins and there will be 8 earnable free chests and keys per Act.
In addition, Riot announced the reduction of champion costs. They stated that starting the next patch, the champion blue essence cost of each champion will be cut by 50%. So, a champion that currently costs 6300 BE will now cost only 3150 BE.
This change might not mean much for older players but it should significantly lessen the time it takes new players to get their desired champions, ultimately making new player experience much better.
As for when the changes should arrive, they will be arriving on Patch 25.05, which is scheduled for March 5.
