Of the mechanics in Minecraft, one of the more advanced ones in the game is the villager trading mechanic. If you want to know all about it then you came to the right place!

How to Trade with Villagers in Minecraft

You can trade with two kinds of villagers in Minecraft. One is a fully grown villager with a profession, the other is a wandering trader. Clicking on either of them will open up a trading interface and you’ll be able to see what they’re offering.

As for what you can trade, different villagers offer different kinds of items depending on their level and profession.

There are 15 villager professions in Minecraft and all of them can be attained by placing a workstation near an unemployed villager (A villager with no current active profession). Moreover, the kind of profession a villager will take depends entirely on the workstation you place. For example, placing a lectern will convert a jobless villager into a librarian, and placing a composter will create a farmer villager.

As mentioned, the kind of items that the villager will trade depends on their profession. For example, an armorer will trade goods like armor and helmet for emeralds whereas a farmer will trade items like cookies and cakes for emeralds. It’s important to state that villagers will also buy items for emeralds, and the kind of items they buy is dependent on their profession as well.

Furthermore, we also told you that the level of the villager also determines the items they’re buying and selling. For example, a level 5 armorer will sell a complete Diamond Armor set for emeralds. Which by the way, is one of the best trades in the game.

In order to level villagers up, all you need to do is to trade with them as often as possible and as much as possible, because trading with them gives them the experience required for leveling up. There are 5 levels in total for each profession. They are

  1. Novice
  2. Apprentice
  3. Journeyman
  4. Expert
  5. Master

  • Newly employed villagers who have not traded can lose their profession if you destroy their workbench. You can then place a different workbench or the same one if you want to reemploy them.
  • If you don’t like the initial trading item pool, you can change it by destroying the workbench and placing it again. This is especially useful if you want to get a specific enchanted book from a librarian.
  • Villagers run out of stock after a certain number of trades. They usually restock the next day.
  • Hitting the villagers, killing a villager who is nearby, or attacking an iron golem who is close by will cause the villagers to increase their prices temporarily.
  • On the other hand, trading with villagers frequently, protecting them from raids, and curing them will cause them to lower their prices.
