How to get Free Skins in League of Legends

Playing a champion for the hundredth time in League of Legends can still feel like a new experience with a brand new skin. And if you get that skin for free, it feels even better.

League of Legends is free-to-play. You can play every game mode and unlock all champions without spending any money. Though you can buy champions, ward skins, icons, and emotes with RP (League currency that you buy with real money), the leading cosmetic items players want are the different skins for their champions.

Good skins are often expensive and can set you back 10$ to 25$. But the good news is Riot has come up with a loot system to reward their players for playing the game. You can earn many skins from playing the game, completing missions during different events, etc.

Many players haven’t spent a single dollar on the game and collect 40-50 skin shards during a season. But to unlock those skins, you will need orange essence to convert the skin shards into permanent skins. So, for example, if you get a shard of a skin that would usually cost 1350 RP, you will need 1050 orange essence to make that permanent.

How to Get Free Skins in League of Legends

As we mentioned earlier, there are several ways you can earn free skins in League. First, let’s start with the best one.

Hextech Chests

You get one Hextech chest every week for just playing the game; that’s 52 chests in a year. Even if you are unlucky, you should still get 30-40 skins from those chests. Sometimes, you can get another chest inside or even Mythic Essence after opening one chest.

To acquire Hextech chests, you need to play a game with a champion you own and get an S- or higher rating with it. Once you get a chest with a champion, you cannot get another chest with that champion during the season. So you must play a different one.

Your collection tab shows all the champions you have earned a Hextech chest with. A chest icon will show up when you hover over the champions. Also, you can see all the champions you haven’t received a chest with during champion select. When playing with your friends, you can still get a chest if your friends get an S- or higher rating. So we suggest playing with a premade team to increase your chances of receiving a chest.

Riot hosts many events during a season. Players can buy a pass for that event to earn more rewards. But even if you don’t buy the pass, there are always some missions that you can easily complete during each pass.

Completing the missions can give you more hextech chests, event orbs, and event points. Usually, you get around 300 event points from completing all the missions. You can buy another event orb for 200 points and spend the 100 points elsewhere. Orbs are guaranteed to contain at least one skin but can also give you gemstones and event bags if you are lucky. Event bags have 3-4 different skins.

Rank and Honor Rewards

You can earn one victorious skin at the end of each season if you reach gold or higher on the rank ladder. Which champion gets Riot chooses the victorious skin. It is usually the most popular champion according to that season’s meta. For last season it was Victorious Sejuani Skin. Victorious skins are not rare but exclusive, as you can’t buy them or earn them in other ways.

If you reach honor level 5, you will also get a token that you can redeem to earn exclusive Medieval Twitch, Grey Warwick skins, or Three Honors Malzahar.
