Getting a Shovel in Windrose is one of the first big upgrades you should aim for, especially if you want to dig up buried treasure, complete early side quests, and stop walking past hidden loot without realizing it. The game does not simply hand you one at the start, so you will need to unlock the recipe and craft it yourself.
How To Unlock the Shovel Recipe in Windrose
To unlock the Shovel recipe in Windrose, you need to progress far enough into the early tutorial to start mining and smelting Copper. The key step is getting Copper Ore, smelting it into Copper Ingots, and then taking the finished Copper Ingot from the Furnace. Once you do that, the Shovel recipe should become available at your Workbench.
This is why some players feel stuck when they find suspicious digging spots early on. The game teaches you about exploration quickly, but the Shovel only becomes craftable after you interact with Copper and start using the smelting system.
Where To Find Copper for the Shovel
Copper Ore can be found in a cave on the starter island. The cave is located near the center of the starting island, and following the tutorial quests should lead you directly to the Copper Cave if you are having trouble finding it.
Before heading out, make sure you have a Pickaxe ready. You need it to mine Copper Ore from the cave. Once you have enough ore, return to your base and use the Furnace to smelt it into Copper Ingots.
Shovel Crafting Recipe in Windrose
Once the recipe is unlocked, you can craft the Shovel at a Workbench. The commonly listed crafting materials are 3 Copper Ingots and 10 Wood. Copper Ingots can be collected from smelted Copper Ore, and Wood from trees or scattered logs.
You will also need a basic Workbench, which is part of the early tutorial flow. If you have not built one yet, do that first, then check the crafting menu after collecting your Copper Ingots.
How To Craft the Shovel
After gathering the materials, go to your Workbench and look for the Shovel under your available craftable tools. If it is not showing up, the most likely reason is that you have not properly unlocked the recipe yet. Smelt Copper Ore into a Copper Ingot, then remove the finished bar from the Furnace.
Once the Shovel is crafted, place it on your hotbar so you can equip it whenever you find a suspicious mound, treasure clue, or red-marked tree.
How To Use the Shovel in Windrose
The Shovel has different modes, so simply equipping it is not always enough. You will need to switch the Shovel into Dig mode, with the mode prompt appearing above your hotbar. On PC, you can press X to move to Dig mode, then click to start digging.
Some players reach treasure spots and think the Shovel is not working when they are actually using the wrong mode. If you are trying to uncover treasure, make sure you are in Dig mode before clicking the ground.
The Shovel is not just a base-building tool. It is also tied to some of Windroseโs early treasure hunting content. And you need it for a buried chest in the early side quest Fifteen Men on a Dead Manโs Chest.
It also helps with hidden Travelerโs Camp chests. PC Gamer found that camps showing 1/2 chests found often have a second chest buried near a tree marked with a red scarf. Digging at the base of that marked tree can reveal the missing chest.
Best Time To Craft the Shovel
The best time to craft the Shovel is right after you unlock Copper smelting. Do not wait too long, because Windrose starts throwing treasure clues and hidden dig spots at you fairly early. Having the Shovel ready means you can clear camps properly, follow treasure maps, and avoid backtracking across the island later.
It is also a cheap tool compared to how useful it is. Since the main materials are Copper Ingots and Wood, you can craft it soon after setting up your first Furnace and Workbench.
To get a Shovel in Windrose, mine Copper Ore from the starter island cave, smelt it into Copper Ingots, collect the finished ingot to unlock the recipe, then craft the Shovel at a Workbench using 3 Copper Ingots and 10 Wood. Once you have it, switch to Dig mode before using it on treasure spots.
