How To Enable WASD Movement in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)

You might want to know how you can enable WASD movement in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The past few weeks have been cooked by Larian Studios’ latest product, Baldur’s Gate 3. This exclusive CRPG element is the sole successor of BGII: Shadows of Amn and BG: Enhanced Edition. As almost the whole theme is based on D&D, the Forgotten Realms is vast, and there is practically no end to it.

Now, there have been issues arising since the beginning. One of them was not being able to control your character’s movement using the WASD keys, which would have given the game an additional immersive feel. And now that the great mod community has come up with a solution, this might be one of the best modifications you can have. However, this particular mod doesn’t only focus on WASD movement. Hop in to learn more about it.

Enable WASD Movement in BG3

BG3 is now more enhanced with this mod that remaps the mechanics. As already mentioned, you can now command your character’s moves using WASD keys or any other compatible input. Besides that, you can also easily switch between character and camera control. It will let you make your strategic decisions without breaking the immersion. Moreover, with the Insert key, you will be able to adapt to your movement speed based on your current situation; from walking to sprinting or vice versa.

This mod’s high compatibility will also ensure easy communication with your friends in multiplayer, even if they don’t have the mod. On top of that, the mod’s adaptability ensures constant functionality, even if the updates are frequent.

How To Install

First of all, you need to install the mod manager. This will practically manage all other mods you install for Baldur’s Gate 3. Then, you will install the required mod files that will satisfy our needs. Let’s get you through this process real quick:

  1. Download NativeModLoader.
  2. Extract the zip file. Then copy both bink2w64.dll and bink2w64_original.dll into this path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\bin\. You will get a prompt asking if you want to overwrite the existing file or not. Hit Yes.

Now you are ready with your manager. That takes us to the next phase.

1. Download the WASD Character Movement mod

2. Extract the zip. Then copy both BG3WASD.dll and BG3WASD.toml.

3. Now, go to this path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\bin\.

4. Create a folder and name it NativeMods.

5. Paste the files here, and you are good to go.

Regarding Some Issues

During the launch, Larian Launcher will show a prompt that it detected corrupted files in the game. This is due to the mod modifying and replacing files. Just ignore it and proceed. And as already mentioned, the mod usually adapts itself to the new updates. However, if there seems to be an issue, redo the steps of the second phase. Or else, wait for a new update of the mod.

UPDATE: PATCH #01 (25.08.23)

Astarion and the Zhentarim have improved the game, enhancing story flow, dialogue, and UI menus. Players can interact with Astarion and the Moonrise Towers, and the Zhentarim at Goblin Camp are more tolerant. The Digital Deluxe DLC has been updated, improving visuals, character models, and gameplay.
