Every Halo game has 4 difficulty levels, these are:

  • Easy: The easiest setting. This makes the game a breeze to playthrough, enemies are weak and runs away often. Recommended for absolute beginners.
  • Normal: This is the standard difficuly akin to any other first person shooters out there. Not too easy and not too hard either. Anyone familiar with FPS games can start from here.
  • Heroic: The game starts to test you from here on out. Enemies are stronger, smarter and will come at you. Stronger classes of enemies become more common.
  • Legendary: As the name suggests, this is the hardest difficulty level in the game, but completing it is a bragging right on its own. Any hardcore Halo fan will attempt for a Legendary completion to honor Masterchief’s raw strength. Here you will die in a blink of an eye. Let that be from a pesky sniper or a barrage of grenades and rockets, or even from a gang of high level elites.

When you first start the campaign, the game lets you pick from the difficulty mentioned above levels and activate Skulls, which change certain aspects of the game. Furthermore, if you think the difficulty you chose is too hard for you or too easy, you can change it mid-game. To do this, you need to:

  • Save game, close the current playthrough and go to the campaign main menu.
  • From here instead of choosing the Continue option, select Load Game.
  • Choose the save file you want to load ( choose the most recent save if you want to continue where you last closed the game)
  • Choose your preffered difficulty option and skulls, if you have found any. Activating skulls will turn off achievements.
  • Select Play.

That is what you need to do if you want to change difficulty settings in Halo Infinite single-player mid-playthrough. Since the game took an open-world approach to reach mission destinations from the map, you cannot set difficulty levels at each mission, unlike the past Halo games. You don’t get the freedom to play specific levels at any difficulty you want, whenever you want, in Halo Infinite. Which also made Legendary runs much smoother.

But the devs have stated that they are working on replayable story missions. So there is a huge chance we will get the old way of playing Halo’s campaign back.
