Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is an excellent subscription for gamers. It gives you access to a wide library of console and PC games, EA Play, cloud streaming, and more. However, if you’re not playing as often or following the recent 50% price hike to the ultimate tier, the service may now be too expensive. If you wish to cancel or at least pause the auto-renewal after the price went up, here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you.

Why you might want to cancel (or just disable auto-renewal)

Before jumping into cancellation, consider these scenarios:

  • You’re simply looking to pause the subscription for a time, so you might prefer just turning off auto-renewal rather than canceling outright.
  • You may lose access to the Game Pass game library immediately (or at the end of the current billing period).
  • In some regions, you may be eligible for a refund for the unused portion, but in others, refunds are not offered.
  • If your Game Pass time was converted from older subscriptions (e.g., from Game Pass Console, PC, or Core), that converted time may not be refundable.

How to cancel Xbox Game Pass Ultimate — step by step

You can cancel via your Xbox console, web browser (Microsoft account portal), or even mobile/tablet (depending on how you originally subscribed). Below are the most dependable ways.

1. Cancel via browser / Microsoft account

This is often the most robust method.

  1. Open a browser and go to account.microsoft.com.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft / Xbox account that has the subscription.
  3. Navigate to Services & subscriptions (or “Subscriptions & billing”)
  4. Find Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in the list of active subscriptions.
  5. Click on Manage beside it.
  6. On the manage page, click Cancel subscription (or “Turn off recurring billing” in some regions)
  7. Microsoft may ask you to confirm or ask whether you want to cancel immediately (ending access) or at the end of the billing period. Confirm your choice.
  8. You should see a confirmation that the subscription is cancelled (or at least that auto-renewal is off). You may also get an email confirming it.

Note: In regions where refunds are allowed, you may see an option to request a refund for unused time.

2. Cancel from the Xbox console itself

If you prefer doing it on your console (Xbox One, Series X|S):

  1. Power on the console and sign in.
  2. Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the Guide.
  3. Go to Profile & systemSettingsAccountSubscriptions
  4. In Subscriptions, find Game Pass Ultimate.
  5. Select it, then choose Cancel subscription or Turn off recurring billing
  6. Confirm your decision when prompted.

In many cases, the console will redirect you to an “Open on Web” link (Edge browser) to complete the cancellation via your Microsoft account.

3. Cancel via mobile/tablet (if applicable)

If your subscription was made via mobile (or if you prefer doing it on your phone):

  • Use a browser or the Microsoft / Xbox app (if it supports subscription management in your region).
  • Go to the Services & subscriptions page as above, sign in, manage your Game Pass Ultimate subscription, and cancel or turn off auto-renewal.

Important: Simply uninstalling the app does not cancel your subscription. You have to cancel it via Microsoft’s account interface.

What happens after cancellation

  • You’ll keep access to Game Pass benefits (games, cloud saves, etc.) until the end of your current billing period — unless you selected immediate cancellation.
  • After that date, you lose access to the Game Pass library, cloud streaming, perks, and any games you didn’t own.
  • Your Xbox / Microsoft account remains intact. You won’t lose your GamerTag, purchases outside of Game Pass, or achievements.
  • If you’re eligible, a refund might be processed (depending on your country). In many places, refunds are not guaranteed.

It doesn’t have to be difficult to cancel your Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. Microsoft makes it rather easy to stop auto-renewal or cancel your account completely, whether you’re using a console or a browser. Just make sure you follow through to the end and check your billing status correctly.
