Gears of War: E-Day has received a new weapon balance update, and several powerful weapons have been hit with significant nerfs. The Coalition has rolled out its latest tuning patch, targeting the Striga, Lancer Mk1, and Gut-Puncher in PvP.

The update follows weeks of player feedback, gameplay data collection, and internal testing. Among the biggest changes, the Striga can no longer instantly kill enemies with headshots, while the Retro Lancer and Gut-Puncher have received damage reductions.

The developers have also confirmed that changes to the Mantle Kick mechanic are currently in development, with additional balance adjustments planned for future updates.

In Brief:

  • The Striga receives major nerfs, with headshots now downing enemies instead of instantly killing them and its gib range reduced from 10 to 3.5 meters.
  • The Lancer Mk1 (Retro) gets a damage reduction, including a weaker Active Reload bonus and shorter effective damage ranges.
  • The Gut-Puncher’s Active Reload damage multiplier has been reduced from 1.5x to 1.25x.
  • The Coalition is working on changes to Mantle Kick and continues monitoring weapon balance across Campaign, PvE, and PvP.

Gears of War: E-Day November 6 Update Focuses on PvP Weapon Balance

The Coalition announced the latest tuning update through the official Gears of War X account, confirming that the changes were developed using community feedback, gameplay telemetry, and testing.

The developers explained that balancing weapons in Gears of War: E-Day requires careful consideration because the game shares a unified sandbox across Campaign, PvE, and PvP.

This means the team needs to collect and review gameplay data from different parts of the game before deciding which weapons need adjustments.

For this particular update, the announced balance changes specifically target PvP.

Three weapons have received nerfs, with the Striga and Retro Lancer seeing the most significant adjustments.

Gears of War: E-Day November 6 Patch Notes: All Weapon Changes

Here are all the weapon balance changes included in the latest update.

Striga Nerfs

The Striga has received some of the biggest nerfs in the patch, particularly to its headshot effectiveness and close-range killing potential.

Changes:

  • Headshots now cause DBNO (Down But Not Out) instead of instantly killing enemies.
  • Gib range reduced from 10 meters to 3.5 meters.
  • Lethal damage range reduced to 14 meters.

Previously, the Striga could instantly eliminate opponents with a headshot, making it particularly dangerous in PvP encounters.

With this update, landing a headshot will instead put enemies into the DBNO state, giving their teammates an opportunity to revive them.

The reduction in gib range is another substantial nerf. The Striga can now gib opponents only within 3.5 meters, compared to the previous 10-meter range.

Its lethal damage range has also been reduced to 14 meters, further limiting its effectiveness at greater distances.

Overall, these adjustments should make the Striga less oppressive while giving opposing players more opportunities to survive encounters.

Lancer Mk1 (Retro) Nerfs

The Lancer Mk1, commonly known as the Retro Lancer, has also received several nerfs targeting its Active Reload damage bonus and damage falloff at different ranges.

Changes:

  • Active Reload damage bonus reduced from 15% to 10%.
  • Short-range damage falloff now ends at 1,200 instead of 1,400.
  • Medium-range damage falloff now ends at 2,200 instead of 3,000.
  • Maximum damage falloff is now reached at 4,000 instead of 6,000.

The biggest takeaway is that the Retro Lancer will now deal less damage during Active Reload and lose damage effectiveness sooner as the distance to its target increases.

Previously, the weapon benefited from a 15% damage increase following a successful Active Reload. That bonus has now been reduced to 10%.

The Coalition has also shortened the weapon’s damage falloff thresholds across short, medium, and long ranges.

This should reduce the Retro Lancer’s ability to dominate engagements from farther away, potentially encouraging players to rely on other weapons for longer-distance gunfights.

However, it should remain a powerful option for players who can control its recoil and make good use of its close-range capabilities.

Gut-Puncher Nerfs

The Gut-Puncher has received a smaller but still meaningful adjustment to its Active Reload damage.

Changes:

  • Active Reload damage multiplier reduced from 1.5x to 1.25x.

This means the weapon’s successful Active Reload bonus now provides a 25% damage increase instead of the previous 50%.

Although the patch includes only one listed adjustment for the Gut-Puncher, the reduction should make its enhanced shots less devastating during PvP encounters.

Players who frequently rely on Active Reload to secure quick eliminations may notice the difference.

These are PvP balance adjustments. The Coalition has not announced equivalent weapon nerfs for Campaign or PvE in this update.

Mantle Kick Changes Are Coming in a Future Update

Alongside the weapon nerfs, The Coalition confirmed that it is actively working on changes to the Mantle Kick mechanic.

Mantle Kick allows players to attack an opponent while vaulting over cover, making it an important part of close-range engagements.

However, the mechanic has also become a topic of discussion among players, particularly regarding how it affects fights around cover.

The developers have not revealed the exact changes they are planning or when those adjustments will arrive.

For now, Mantle Kick remains unchanged.

The Coalition also confirmed that it will continue collecting gameplay data across all modes and weapons to determine where additional balance changes may be needed.
