Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has completely stepped away from the game he helped create. He says he hasn’t played since April 2021 and deliberately avoids videos, community discussions, and even searches linking his name to Overwatch.
In an interview with GameSpot, Kaplan explained that keeping his distance helps him maintain a healthy separation from a project that was such a major part of his life.
In brief:
- Jeff Kaplan says he hasn’t played Overwatch since April 2021.
- He avoids Overwatch subreddits, YouTube content, and searches about himself and the game.
- He actively tells recommendation algorithms to stop showing him Overwatch content.
- Kaplan says the separation is intentional and helps protect his mental wellbeing.
Jeff Kaplan Hasn’t Played Overwatch Since April 2021

Kaplan described his departure as an “almost clinical separation.” His personal experience with Overwatch ends with the version he left behind, when Echo was the latest hero added to the roster.
“I’ve literally not played the game since April 2021. We had added Echo. She was the last hero,” Kaplan said.
Players spent years watching Kaplan explain updates and discuss the game’s direction. After leaving Blizzard, he chose to draw a clear boundary around that chapter of his career.
Jeff Kaplan Avoids Overwatch Videos and Subreddits

Kaplan explained that after posting his farewell messages to the competitive Overwatch and main Overwatch subreddits, he stopped returning to read them.
“I don’t, for my own psyche, I don’t read the subreddits,” he said.
He also avoids watching Overwatch videos on YouTube or searching for his name alongside the game. Keeping up with what has changed since his departure is something he deliberately chooses to skip.
Even recommendation feeds get the same treatment. Kaplan says he tells algorithms he’s no longer interested when they serve him Overwatch content.
“I know you think I’m the Overwatch guy, but like, that’s just not for me anymore,” he explained.
Kaplan Wants a Healthy Separation From Overwatch

Kaplan connected that approach to his earlier experience leaving the World of Warcraft team. Walking away from a game that had become part of his identity taught him how emotionally difficult that transition could be.
He still expressed pride in the people who created Overwatch and described its BlizzCon 2014 reveal as one of his life’s most special moments. His comments frame the distance as a personal boundary, with the game’s future belonging to the developers and players who continue supporting it.
