Evil Geniuses is closing its doors after more than 25 years in esports. The organization will cease competitive and day-to-day operations on November 2, 2026, citing limited sponsorship opportunities and the rising cost of competing at the highest level.

The announcement follows EG missing out on a VCT Americas partnership spot for 2027. For fans who watched the organization lift the VALORANT Champions trophy just three years ago, itโ€™s a tough ending to a memorable run.

In brief:

  • Evil Geniuses will stop competitive and daily operations on November 2, 2026.
  • CEO Chris DeAppolonio cited sponsorship challenges and rising competition costs.
  • Players across all EG rosters can begin discussions with other organizations immediately.
  • EGโ€™s VALORANT players and coaches can sign with new teams when the season ends on November 2.

Evil Geniuses Shutting Down

In EGโ€™s announcement, CEO Chris DeAppolonio described several years of rebuilding the organization. Those efforts included stabilizing operations, improving public sentiment, increasing content output and engagement, entering new games, and expanding its creator roster.

According to DeAppolonio, those improvements still couldnโ€™t overcome the financial pressures facing the business. Sponsorship remained limited while the cost of maintaining top-level teams continued to rise.

EGโ€™s official website also points to constrained investment, saying the organization had reached the conclusion that it could no longer operate responsibly under current conditions.

The shutdown announcement arrived shortly after the final spot in the next VCT Americas partnership lineup was announced, leaving EG without a partnered place for 2027.

That setback adds context to the timing, although DeAppolonioโ€™s statement attributes the closure to broader financial problems. EG did not identify the partnership outcome as the sole reason for shutting down.

Its departure also closes the chapter on an organization that won VALORANT Champions 2023, one of the biggest achievements in its long competitive history.

What Happens to Evil Geniuses Players and Staff?

EG has allowed every player across its rosters to speak with other organizations immediately. Its VALORANT players and coaches will become free to sign with new teams on November 2, when the 2026 season ends.

The organization says it will wind down in an orderly way and work closely with affected players, coaches, and staff throughout the transition.

DeAppolonio also asked employers to consider EGโ€™s people for available roles, offering personal recommendations for players, creators, and staff. Helping them find new opportunities over the coming months is now his stated priority.

Evil Geniuses Leaves Behind a Championship Legacy

Founded in 1999, Evil Geniuses built a history spanning multiple generations of esports. Its biggest achievements include winning Dota 2โ€™s The International 2015, the 2018 Call of Duty Championship, and VALORANT Champions 2023.

The immediate focus now shifts to the players, coaches, creators, and staff searching for their next home before EGโ€™s operations end in November.
