How To Start The Variable Quest

Destiny 2’s Season of Defiance is offering players the opportunity to unlock a powerful new weapon, the Vexcalibur Exotic Glaive, through a hidden Exotic quest. The quest’s first step involves players tracking down six floating Vex cubes scattered across The Gulch in the EDZ. These cubes grant players a Simulated Access Code, which allows them to enter a hidden cave in The Gulch where they’ll begin the //NODE.OVRD.AVALON// Exotic mission.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to find all six Vex cubes in The Gulch:
- Spawn into The Gulch and turn left. You should see a gap between two buildings. Jump across the gap and look for the cube floating above a Cabal terminal.
- From your starting location, drop down to the underside of the highway. The cube should be floating under the overpass, next to the Lost Sector entrance.
- Make your way to the middle of the zone, where you’ll find the third cube surrounded by burnt trees.
- Head to the northern end of The Gulch and look for a tall tree and a few boulders. The cube should be floating nearby.
- Go to the eastern side of The Gulch and look for road signs overlooking the destroyed highway. The cube should be floating above the signs.
- Finally, head to the southeast corner of the area and follow the dirt road halfway up. Jump off your Sparrow and look for a small cluster of trees. The cube should be floating in the middle of some fallen tree logs.
Remember that you need to collect all six cubes within 30 seconds of collecting each one, or the timer will reset. If you manage to collect all six, you’ll be able to enter the hidden cave in The Gulch and start the Vexcalibur Exotic quest.
How To Start //NODE.OVRD.AVALON//

To start the //NODE.OVRD.AVALON// mission in Destiny 2’s Season of Defiance, you must first obtain a full simulated cave code by collecting all six floating Vex cubes scattered around The Gulch in the EDZ. Once you have the code, make your way to the hidden cave in the southeast corner of The Gulch and interact with the friendly Harpy inside to activate the portal to the mission.
Enter The Vex Network Guide

The initial phase of this quest takes place in the depths of the Vex Network. You must complete some jumping puzzles to move around the room. Descend to the gravity lift beneath you to enter the sector. Your objective is to move downwards until you arrive inside a room with multiple barriers.
Keep an eye out for a tiny opening on the floor and slide through it. Proceed along the Vex fluid current until you encounter a pair of Harpies. Eliminate them, then search for a small gap in the wall. Enter the gap and continue descending until you come across the first encounter.
Enter The Access Codes

You have to start this encounter by approaching the patrolling Vex in the vicinity. Soon after, a column of Vex data will emerge at the centre of the arena, accompanied by a sequence of symbols located toward the right of the column.
Your objective is to enter the correct sequence by destroying the symbols that appear around the Vex column. Every few seconds, the Vex column will generate three symbols: a cube, a diamond, and a pyramid. A sequence of symbols will be present next to the Vex column.
For instance, if we receive the sequence cube, pyramid, and pyramid, we must destroy the symbols in the order from top to bottom. In this case, we would shoot the cube, wait for more symbols to appear, and then shoot the pyramid and then the pyramid again.
If the symbols are not destroyed in the right order, your progress will reset, and the sequence will randomize. There’s no time constraint, so if the Vex becomes overwhelming, you can shift your focus to eliminate them. When you successfully enter three codes, a new segment of the arena will open.
Repeat the same process as before, entering the codes in the correct order while defending yourself against any adversaries. After doing this three more times, a swarm of Vex will emerge at the other end of the room. Wipe them out to complete the encounter.
Explore The Vex Network

You have to complete a brief platforming challenge before arriving at the second encounter. After entering the next chamber, you have to go around the vex barrier. After reaching the narrow section, you will encounter some segment of the wall trying to push you into the abyss.
Adjust your timing and try to jump when the wall retracts. At the other end of the platform, you’ll find a gravity lift that will transport you to the next encounter. There is a rally option before entering the gravity lift; you can use that to fill up your supers and heavy ammo.
Defeat The Data Nullifier

After entering the gravity lift, you will start the next encounter. You will see some Harpies and a hydra on that platform. Soon after defeating the Harpies, a wipe mechanic known as Deletion Cycle will activate.
You must eliminate headless Goblins and collect their motes from concealing yourself from the wipe mechanic. You have 40 seconds to gather eight motes from the Vex pillar at the center. When you collect enough motes, deposit them to uncover a hole in the ground directly beneath the Vex pillar.
When the hole opens, there will be 2 additional vex inside that platform, and you must kill them before entering the hole; otherwise, they will kill you inside the hole while the wipe mechanic is active. After killing those vexes, descend into the hole and wait for the wipe mechanic to finish.
After the wipe mechanic is finished, come out from that hole and start dealing damage to The Data Nullifier. Once you have done enough damage, it will retreat, and the wipe mechanic will start once again. Repeat the same process as before and hide inside the hole to finish the wipe mechanic and then damage The Data Nullifier again, and it will retreat once again.
You have to repeat the same process three times to kill The Data Nullifier, first with 8 motes, then 10 motes, and lastly, a total of 12 motes. After killing The Data Nullifier, you will complete this encounter, and you are good to go for the next encounter.
Enter The Node Core

After killing The Data Nullifier, continue toward the vex network. You will encounter the same mechanism as Explore The Vex Network, where you need to jump across the platform while a segment of the wall tries to push you into the abyss.
Adjust your timing and try to jump when the wall retracts. At the other end of the platform, you’ll find a gravity cannon that will transport you to the next encounter. This encounter is fairly straightforward; look out for the wall segment and adjust your timing, and you are good to go.
Defeat Brakion

If you played the Pyramidion strike back in D2Y1, you’ll recognize Brakion as the final boss in this mission. The fight combines elements of the original Brakion encounter with some twists and turns. To start this encounter, go towards the portal at the far end of the arena to spawn Brakion.
You have to lower its health bar while also clearing some adds. Once you have dealt enough damage and lowered its health, the boss and its forces will retreat, and a portal will appear. Enter the portal to start phase two. In Brakion’s second phase, you must enter codes into a central Vex pillar to initiate DPS Phase.
You have to defeat a powerful Hydra to spawn the pillar. Then look for the code sequence around the corner. This time you have to match five symbols instead of three. Once you have matched all five symbols, the Bosses damage phase will start, and after dealing enough damage to Brakion, the boss will retreat again, and another portal will open.
In the final phase, your goal is to defeat Brakion; there is no matching sequence whatsoever. You’ll face lots of adds and little covers, so it’s wise to eliminate the adds first. Once you’ve cleared the adds, attack Brakion until it loses enough health to reveal the weak spot and damage; its weak spot as quickly as possible to defeat it. After defeating the boss, return to the H.E.L.M. to receive your exotic glaive.
Vexcalibur Catalyst and Crafting Guide

If you have acquired Vexcalibur, you can access three Exotic Intrinsics that are unlocked weekly. After obtaining the weapon, head to the H.E.L.M. to receive a Legendary quest that requires you to defeat enemies using Vexcalibur to earn a new mod type.
These mods can be slotted into the weapon and will help you to access one of the three hidden Exotic chests located in the //NODE.OVRD.AVALON// mission. To obtain the chest, equip the mod, enter the mission, locate the chest, complete the mission, and then travel to the Enclave in Savathun’s Throne World to reforge the weapon with new intrinsics. You can obtain the Exotic Catalysts for this glaive after clearing the Avalon mission on Legendary difficulty.
Vexcalibur Hidden Chest Locations

There is a total of three exotic chest locations for the Vexcalibur glaive. But they will be available once each week, so you will need a total of three weeks after getting the Vexcalibur. As of now, there is only one chest available for us:
Chest One

During the opening jumping puzzle in the //NODE.OVRD.AVALON// mission, you can locate the first hidden chest. Once you slide past the first set of Vex barriers, turn around and climb up the left barrier. You’ll see a switch, which you need to activate. From there, make your way to the bottom of the Vex stream. You’ll notice a rectangular room above the stream that’s barricaded by Vex barriers. To bypass the barrier, equip Vexcalibur and use the block ability. Once inside, interact with the switch to spawn the chest.
