Last Stand: Origin and How it Works
Since its inception in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, The Last Stand has been a hated perk. If a player receives damage that would usually kill them, they will drop onto their back and take out their pistol with max ammo. They won’t be able to move, switch to their Primary Weapon, plant Claymores, use an RPG-7, or throw grenades/C4s. The player can only rotate on the spot, fire their pistol, aim down the sights, knife, and use killstreaks.
However, headshots, direct grenade impacts, knife, killstreaks, shotgun blasts at point-blank range, and explosions (from explosives or killstreaks) will render Last Stand useless, resulting in an instant kill. Last Stand will end if the player takes a single hit from an opposing player after 10 seconds have elapsed since the player was put in Last Stand. Also, if the player ends it of one’s own accord by holding the use key generally called the “Coward’s Way Out”; this does not result in suicide.
The pistol a player uses in Last Stand is the one that was selected as the secondary weapon. Players with the “Overkill” perk or who have switched their pistols in-game for a second primary weapon will use the standard gun (default loadout M9) when put into Last Stand. Before going into Last Stand, the player will also have maximum ammunition and a full magazine in the weapon, regardless of whether the pistol’s magazine was empty or not.
Perk System Rework
The perk system is getting a rework in Modern Warfare 2. Instead of three perks, players will now choose four perks. In the first perk slot, two perks can be selected. The two perks in the first slot will help dictate a player’s playstyle. In slots, 2 and 3 players will be able to choose one perk.
Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Radar perk will get scrapped from the game as the classic minimap from previous games will make a return.
Negative Reactions to Last Stand
Players are reacting negatively to the perk being added to the game. ‘Last Stand’ was set to return in Modern Warfare (2019); however, it was cut out from the game just before launch. According to the community, the perk is only beginner-friendly and adds nothing to the game.
Whatever decision Infinity Ward makes, taking player feedback into account, the Last Stand perk should be axed altogether. It made no impact in CoD 4: Modern Warfare. However, the community would love it if they replaced Last Stand with Martyrdom or One Man Army.
