In a stunning turn of events, the recently released game Black Myth: Wukong has shattered sales expectations, also selling an impressive 10 million copies across all platforms in just a matter of days.

The gaming industry is no stranger to controversies. We saw some critics on the Chinese-developed action RPG Black Myth: Wukong. Despite facing significant pre-release criticism from various outlets, the game has shattered sales expectations.

This achievement places it among the fastest-selling games of all time. The game rivals Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 in terms of sales. The game’s success comes despite—or perhaps partly due to—attempts by some mainstream games journalists to criticize it before its release.

But surprisingly, despite all the criticism, the game captured the attention of gamers, and in popular gaming platform steam, we saw 2.4 million cocurrent players.

In order to put these numbers into perspective, other recent successful game launches pale in comparison:

  • Elden Ring: 13 million copies in 1 month
  • Cyberpunk 2077: 13.7 million copies in 1 month
  • Baldur’s Gate 3: 20 million copies in 5 months

Additionally, only Nintendo Switch titles like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have matched this pace, selling 10 million copies in their first three days.

For those of you don’t know, Black Myth: Wukong, developed by a Chinese studio and based on the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West.” The novel was written in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty.

Black Myth: Wukong continues to dominate sales charts and player counts. Moreover, the game serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the gaming industry. For now, it appears that Black Myth: Wukong has not only met, but even surpassed, the high standards set by its eager fan base.
