Learn about the dice notation +1d4 in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the latest game in the Baldur’s Gate RPG series by renowned Belgian developer Larian Studios. The game shares a lot of similar features with another famous game, Dungeons and Dragons. One such similar feature includes the dice notations that can be seen in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Dice notation in Baldur’s Gate 3 is less complicated than that of Dungeons and Dragons. However, beginners might have some confusion in understanding the dice notations of this game. In this guide, we will provide you with every piece of information you need to know about dice notations and the common notation +1d4.

What does +1d4 mean in BG3

You have to throw dice in different situations in the game to complete certain skill checks. These dice notations follow a similar pattern, where the first number means the number of throws, and the second number means the number of sides of the die.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, dice can have multiple sides. D4 stands for a four-sided dice, D6 for a six-sided dice, D8 for an eight-sided dice, D10 for a ten-sided dice, and D12 for a twelve-sided dice.

Moreover, the first number of these notations resembles the number of times a die is thrown. So, if you see a notation starting with 1, it means the dice will be thrown once, hence the multiplier. A notation starting with 2 means the dice will be thrown twice. Similarly, a notation with 3, 4, or 5 will indicate that the dice will be thrown 3, 4, or 5 times, respectively.

So, the notation +1d4 means that a four-sided dice will be thrown one time only. So the probable result can be between 1-4. Again, if you see the notation +4d4, it means a four-sided dice will be thrown four times. So the probable result can be between 4-16.
