Best Wizard Build: Baldur's Gate 3

Learn about the best subclasses, armories, skills, and spells for the Wizard class in Baldur’s Gate 3.

If you are into Magic and more spells in general in Baldur’s Gate 3, this is the best build for a wizard you can ever find. As a Wizard, you will be focusing on mastering the arcane along with Intelligence and Wisdom. With proficiency in daggers and some other ranged weapons, a Wizard can be a tough nut on the battlefield. Additionally, your ability to immediately cast new spells from scrolls you find along the way might even taunt your enemies.

And in this build guide, we will talk about being the wisest Wizard with a high stat in Intelligence who will be able to cast any spell. We will also talk about the abilities in detail and where you can think of spending your AP more. Without further ado, let’s jump right into it.

Wizard Class

A wizard born from scratch can be proficient with Daggers, Darts, or even Light Crossbows. Yet, the armor’s efficacy may be slightly overstated, and that should be no issue as spell-based stats dominate everything else. Moreover, in very little time, a Wizard can even transcribe the Magic Scrolls they come across on their way.

Note that not all schools use the same spelling strategies. The ideal option is to go for the one that complements your taste. Yet, there are a few more factors to look for that could affect your decisions.

Best Ability Points Assignment for Wizard

  • Strength: 8
  • Dexterity: 13
  • Constitution: 14
  • Intelligence: 17
  • Wisdom: 11
  • Charisma: 12

Wizard class heavily relies on Intelligence. However, Charisma and Wisdom both play a pivotal role as well. On top of that, Constitution can cover up the low Strength issue while agility can be measured with 13 scores in Dexterity. As the max cap is 20 for each, we will focus on Intelligence to the last level. After the rest goes to Charisma and Wisdom.

Best Wizard Race

Best Ability Points Assignment for Wizard

The High Elf race is ideal for Wizards due to its extra racial Wizard cantrip. Wizards frequently sling spells, so having spells that don’t require slots is crucial. Picking up a handy out-of-combat cantrip, like Light, Mage Hand, or Dancing Lights, can enhance their spells and slots.

Best Wizard Subclass

When it comes to high-damaging spells, the Evocation Wizard has the upper hand. Most of these spells also have an AOE component. Spells like Spell Sculpt can even bypass enemy defenses and always succeed on a direct hit, regardless of whether or not the target is an ally. But you have to keep your favorable position for that to work. Other than that, you have complete freedom over the spells you use.

Last but not least, Evocation School offers all the spells at the lowest possible price you can afford. Moreover, when you pass by a magic scroll, spells from Evocation will automatically save it up.

Best Wizard Equipment

Wizards lack armor proficiencies. So we will be conjuring extra protection through spells. To enhance the skills, equip gear with extra effects or additional spells useful in combat. Wizards are proficient in only a few basic weaponry, but a quarterstaff can trip melee enemies and provide additional bonuses.

Best Wizard Spells

Level 1: Grease, Thunderwave, Mage Armor, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile

Level 2: Scorching Ray, Shatter, Misty Step

Level 3: Cloud of Daggers

Level 4: Detect Thoughts, Crown of Madness

Level 5: Fireball, Hypnotic Pattern

Best Wizard Features

The main focus is to increase Intelligence to 20. Along with that, Resilient feat increases Constitution by 1 point and provides proficiency in saving throws. This allows for 2 chances to continue casting concentration spells, enhancing the effectiveness of saving throws.

UPDATE: PATCH #01 (25.08.23)

Players can interact with Astarion and the Moonrise Towers, and the Zhentarim at Goblin Camp are more tolerant. The Digital Deluxe DLC has been updated, improving visuals, character models, and gameplay.
