Baldur’s Gate 3 Multiplayer Explained
Baldur’s Gate 3 has a complex multiplayer system. It allows players to handpick their party and embark on their journey. However, as the game is purely story-driven, one host will make the main dialogue decisions in-game. Moreover, single-player progression will not carry over to multiplayer sessions. There are currently three multiplayer options available for players.
Normal Multiplayer
Normal multiplayer features a drop-in feature where players can go to the Multiplayer tab and look for hosts. The menu displays the lobby they are joining, the host’s in-game level, and the Act they are currently going through.
This mode will allow you to take over an NPC’s place at the host’s party. Furthermore, you can vote while making decisions. This game mode encourages teamwork; all party members can share their opinions while making dialogue decisions.
Local Co-op Multiplayer
Local co-op multiplayer allows players to play on the same system together. However, local co-op requires all players to be on a controller, as the keyboard and mouse are disabled. Up to four players can play together during a local co-op session using split-screen.
Standard Co-op Multiplayer
Standard Co-op Multiplayer is where players create a party from the start, with one being the host. The host has the saved game files, which means they are not accessible if the host is not present.
Unlike other multiplayer modes, all players in standard co-op can progress independently by interacting with NPCs or in-game prompts. However, all players must interact with the host to progress through the storyline.
Being a Dungeons and Dragons game, Baldur’s Gate 3‘s best experience is when players create their own party with their friends or other players rather than NPC companions.
