Apex Legends Season 31, Cipher, is bringing a new reason to fight over mid-match loot, a dual-wield twist on the Wingman, and a much-needed refresh for Crypto. Respawnโs designer notes explain the thinking behind those changes, alongside buffs for Lifeline and Revenant and nerfs for Loba, the Prowler, and the Nemesis.
The update also brings back the Hemlok Burst AR and Districtโs nighttime setting. Hereโs what players can expect when Cipher launches on November 3, 2026.
In brief:
- Strongholds introduce a contested mid-match objective with Care Package weapons, Gold Guns, and other rare loot.
- Akimbo Wingman fires two sequential shots per trigger pull, while the Hemlok Burst AR returns.
- Crypto gets a drone battery system and enemy marking, Lifeline gets a revive shield upgrade, and Revenant regains Silence through an upgrade.
- Full patch notes arrive on November 2, ahead of the November 3 launch.
Strongholds Give Apex Season 31 a New Mid-Match Objective
One Stronghold will drop into each match alongside the existing Care Packages. These structures arrive locked, and squads must capture and hold the surrounding area to access the rewards inside.
Expect Care Package weapons, Gold Guns, and other rare loot. Strongholds also deploy cover when they land, giving teams somewhere to fight as opponents contest the capture.
Respawn wants Strongholds to bring back a reliable opportunity for major loot upgrades after last seasonโs loot rework. Their location, nearby terrain, and the ring should all influence whether a squad commits to the fight.
Akimbo Wingman Introduces a Two-Shot Burst
The Wingman is joining Apexโs akimbo lineup, with a firing pattern built around two sequential shots. Pulling the trigger fires one revolver and then the other, creating a short burst.
Respawn says the goal is to preserve the Wingmanโs demanding aim and mid-range poke identity while making it more approachable. Itโs also the first new akimbo addition since the system debuted in Season 22.
The designer notes explain how the weapon fires, but players will need the full patch notes for a complete breakdown of its balance values.
Crypto Rework Encourages Players to Stay With Their Squad
Cryptoโs refresh tackles a familiar problem: a teammate spending too long piloting the drone while everyone else fights.
His drone now has a 25-second battery and automatically recalls when it runs out. In return, Respawn is improving its handling, speeding up entry, and reducing the wait after it gets destroyed. The drone will also be more visible to enemies.
Several changes should help Crypto gather information and get moving:
- Teammate speed boost: Ally.MoveTo() becomes part of his base kit, letting him run faster toward teammates.
- 360-degree scanning: The drone scans around itself instead of only in the direction it faces.
- Enemy marking: Marks remain visible through geometry for eight seconds, even if the drone is recalled or destroyed.
- Automatic targeting: The deployed drone attempts to mark enemies, while manual piloting allows players to fire a marking shot.
- Less visual clutter: The drone stops scanning doors and loot bins.
Cryptoโs EMP Rewards Better Drone Placement
Crypto can now deploy a stowed drone and activate EMP with one press of the Ultimate button. He can also trigger it when the drone is already deployed or while piloting it.
EMPโs effect now depends on line of sight. Enemies behind cover take 50 shield damage and a light movement slow. Enemies the drone can see take full shield damage and a stronger slow.
His upgrades are changing too. One extends marks to 12 seconds, while Charged Up adds 10 seconds to the droneโs battery.
Lifeline Buffs Bring Back the Revive Shield as an Upgrade
Respawn says Lifelineโs pick rate falls sharply at higher ranks, so Season 31 gives her more frequent healing and new upgrade choices.
Lifeline will receive D.O.C. healing while gliding, and the previous upgrade that reduced her Tactical cooldown by 10 seconds is moving into her base kit.
Her upgrade changes include:
- Improved Gliding: Better handling alongside the increased glide duration.
- Enhanced Radio: Increased D.O.C. assign distance moves from Level 3 to replace BattPack.
- Revive Shield: A new Level 3 option creates a shield protecting the teammate being revived.
- Ultimate Cooldown: Another Level 3 option reduces her Ultimate cooldown by 60 seconds.
The revive shield is the standout addition, though players will have to choose it over the faster Ultimate.
Revenant Buffs Bring Silence Back Through His Tactical
Revenantโs changes focus on making his upgrades more useful while improving his base abilities.
His Tactical cooldown drops by five seconds, with faster attack and charge-up timing. His Ultimate cooldown also drops by 30 seconds.
Respawn is removing the 35-second cap on his active Ultimate timer, allowing knocks to keep adding five seconds. New upgrades give him more ways to maintain pressure:
- Every Lasting: Extends his active Ultimate by 10 seconds when he gets a knock.
- Silence: Landing from his Tactical leap triggers an area pulse that silences affected enemies for four seconds.
- No Escape: Refreshes his Tactical when Assassinโs Instinct marks a low-health enemy.
Silenceโs return should give Revenant players another reason to commit to an aggressive leap, especially when an enemy squad relies on abilities to escape.
Loba Nerfs Reduce Her Ability Frequency
Lobaโs Season 31 nerfs target how often she can use her Tactical and Ultimate.
| Ability | Previous cooldown | Season 31 cooldown |
|---|---|---|
| Tactical | 25 seconds | 30 seconds |
| Ultimate | 120 seconds | 150 seconds |
Respawn says her recent buffs made her a popular pick, but her abilities are currently available too frequently.
Axle Changes Recap the October 1 Hotfix
The Axle section covers changes from the October 1, 2026 hotfix, rather than a fresh set of Season 31 launch nerfs.
Respawn explains that her high-speed movement and shooting had too few tradeoffs. The notes discuss disabling aim assist in the relevant ability context to preserve skill-based aiming without adding random spread.
The developer also wanted to reduce Kickstartโs close-range strength. Its more punishing knockback now requires firing the drone from farther away, giving opponents more opportunity to see it coming.
Prowler and Nemesis Nerfs Target Rising Weapon Performance
Both the Prowler and Nemesis have steadily climbed in usage and win rate, prompting Respawn to reduce their reliability in Cipher.
The designer notes do not list exact damage, recoil, or other numerical adjustments for either weapon. Those details will need to come from the full patch notes.
Meanwhile, the Elite Hemlok Breach AR is being vaulted as Akimbo Wingman arrives. The regular Hemlok Burst AR returns, adding another change to the seasonโs weapon lineup.
Apex Legends Season 31 Release Date and Full Patch Notes
Apex Legends Season 31 launches on November 3, 2026, with the full Cipher patch notes scheduled for November 2.
Districtโs nighttime setting is also returning following community requests. Respawn plans to experiment further with day and night changes across patches to keep familiar maps feeling fresh.
