Since the release of competitive mode on VALORANT, there were several concerns surrounding hardware and network issues of a player affecting the entire competitive experience. A timeout system in place would help the affected player sort out his issues without ruining the quality of the match.

A timeout is basically a way to pause the ongoing competitive match for a short amount of time. The aim of implementing this timeout system is to quickly resolve any technical difficulties a player might be facing. A player might have his game suddenly running choppy and in need of a game restart. Another player might be facing internet issues and in need of a router restart.

For established titles in Esports like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive it is common to have some sort of timeout mechanism. Players of VALORANT have been asking for a timeout system for several months now and finally, Riot is to deliver on that request soon.

How to use the timeout system

When any player is facing any technical issue for which a pause might be necessary, he can initiate a timeout vote with specific commands in chat.

  • Command: “/to” or “/timeout”
  • Description: Call a vote to trigger a time out at the start of the next round.
    • *Timeouts cannot be used in succession and a limited number of them can be called.

So with the addition of timeouts, VALORANT is indeed heading towards the right track. I believe this feature will be very beneficial to a lot of players and will improve the overall competitive experience.
